He came along when football was young and at 70 he is still as rugged as his West Virginia oaks or his Michigan hem locks. By a rule of the Western conference, 70 is the retiring age, which means that one of the ablest and most colorful characters from the American sporting scene has come to the end of a football road that goes back to West Virginia and the autumn of 1895. Only Lonnie Stagg and Pop Warner can look back a deeper distance to a faraway past faraway and long ago. The game has given us only one Stagg only one Warner only one Zuppke and only one Yost. They painted the scene with a flaming, flaring smear of vivid color that no one else barring only the famous Knute Rockne has ever It was in 1895 that a big, shaggy-hairegawky backwoods teacher from Fairview saw and played in bis first football game. Hurry-u- p Yost had arrived. Yost was so keen about football from the start that no one university could offer him enough competition. So in 1895 he played with West Virginia, Lafayette and the Brink Allegheny Athletic club. Thorne of Yale was one of the Lafayette coaches when Yost was starring on a team that beat one of Pennsylvanias star elevens by 6 to 4. Yost wanted to play football all day long, Brink once told me. And talk it all night, he might have added. d, By ROBERT RIom4 by S i. it' McSHANE Newtpopor Union iniimiimiiiiimiiiiiimmiiimiiiiiimiiui who THOSEtocash customers stay awake long enough to see Billy Soose plod his way to chama middleweight pionship victory over Ken Overlin cause for recently had a complaint. First, the fight was a dull, dreary affair with Soose, who didnt deserve It, getting the nod from both judges and the referee. Second, the worlds middleweight or muddleweight championship was not at stake. A lad by the name of Tony Zale, hailing from Gary, Ind., has a much better claim to that honor than either of the gentlemen. Back to complaint No. 1. Unquestionably the bout was one of the most uninteresting spectacles ever perpetrated upon a long suffering public. Soose was a favorite from the day the match was made. When the boys climbed into the ring the night of the fight, the lobby odds were 2Vi to 1 on him. The "champ wasnt given much of a chance. newspaper men at the ringside voted 2 to I for Overlin. They were far from enthusiastic about the fight, but they did think Overlin won. Not so the officials. Referee Arthur Donovan and Judges Marty Monroe and Billy Healy reported unanimously for Soose. Donovans card gave Soose eight rounds and Overlin seven. Monroe scored the fight similarly. Healy He Championship Dynasty Hurry-u- p Hurry-u- p arrived at all-tim- people. A Football Life For over 40 years football has been Yosts life. He has eaten it, dreamed it, talked it and lived it. The last time I saw him we had lunch together at one oclock. At three oclock the next morning he was still showing me what made a good punter, and how to block. At the finish 1 was a battered and a beaten wreck. You have to be in ideal condition to talk with Yost. He hammers your chest with the powerful, stubby fingers of both hands. This variance in opinion might indicate that the fight was a thrilling encounter between two brawlers who gave everything they had in a brave, strong effort to whale their opponent. Sadly enough, that picture couldnt be more untrue. A barroom brawl would have been more exciting and twice as dangerous. It was a tiresome performance, and the fans who saw it wont be numbered among those who demand a repeat match. Complaint No. 2, the more serious charge, demands a bit of recent historical evidence. Tony Zale owns the middleweight championship by He whipped right of conquest. Seattle A1 Hostak, the former legitimate champion. Al, in his turn, had won the title from Freddy Steele. Steele won the crown through victory over the champion who preceded him. This whole chain, built entirely of championship links, can be stretched back ad infinitum. Zales title is as clear cut as Sooses is phobey. Yet, Soose was described as the winnah and the new champeen in an inspired announcement at the end of the fight. Why? Because Mike Jacobs and the favorably inclined New York boxing commission, controllers of boxing in the East, decided by edict that Soose is the champion. Neither Zale nor Hostak are conJacobs. trolled by the men. company They are not Therefore Soose would never get permission to fight them. It was that the therefore, necessary, title be at stake in this fight. Then the outlaw fighters would be eliminated without benefit of fists. Jacobs has declared that Soose is champion, so thats that. Zales claim is very conveniently ignored in favor of one of his own boys. And Uncle Mike, with a stranglehold on the fight game, is powerful enough to wear down the opposition and make his claim stick. New York has a peculiar claim to possession of the title. The state boxing commission, whose authority ends at the state's borders, developed a pronounced dislike for Ilostak a few years ago. Hostak was ruled out of the championship. The board was stuck for a while, but somewhere they heard that one Ceferino Garcia had the right weight qualifications and that he had done a bit of boxing. Here, of course, was the ideal candidate. Promptly, and to that gentleman's astonishment, they made him king of the middleweight division. 165-pou- 1 Name Address But when the fight was over the didnt think it was that close. Michigan that Yost came to instant fame. I still believe those Michigan teams from 1901 through 1905 were the greatest five consecutive football teams any university ever moved into destructive action. The enthusiastic demand for knitted things has gone beyond what even the most optimistic dealers anticipated. Not for many seasons has there been such a tremendous vogue for handknits and for machine knits that look like handknits. The wonders that are being performed in simulating, through knitted technique, tweeds and patterned woolens seem almost unbelievable until one sees the 1941 knitted apparel. In modern displays one comes across such stunning machine-kni- t models as are pictured in the accompanying illustration. The town suit shown to the left is a tailor knit of navy wool combined with a nubby white yarn. The horizontal stripes are cleverly worked through the o fitted jacket. The navy skirt of nubby wool knit is simple in line a wonderful light machine-kni- t fabric that gives body for good tailoring. White gloves and shirt and bright red straw hat make it crisp looking for town. The casual dress to the right, a clever simulated handknit in crayon beige, is one of the reasons for the new enthusiasm for knitted clothes. Fashioned on simple line, its yoke, sleeves and skirt introduce interesting texture in ribbed effect. The bodice is closely knit and it is trimmed with metal buttons and belt. While most of the newer knit skirts have the pleated look there are also skirts with stylish gored flares. In jacket styles h one finds endless variety. tailored jackets, often with small notched collars, novelty gold buttons and four patch pockets, are leaders. One very stylish jacket is the type, with slight easy blousing above a belted waistline. Stripes are often favored in jackets worn with plain skirts. In dresses a popular choice is wool .. chenille that looks as if it is Also a favorite is a collarless line plaid wool knit model with round neck, and buttons down to the waist. Jacket sweaters are very important. They are interesting because of their novelty and variety. The cable stitch cardigan, which comes well down over the hips is a favorite type. Novel trims in endless variety add zest to the jacket mode. One of the interesting decorative touches is narrow fringe made of the yam of which the jacket is knitted. Enthusiasm for things knitted is reflected in a revived vogue for swim suits that are fashioned most intriguingly, a favorite model being striped and styled along princess lines. Red and white is the most popular color combination. Wrist-lengt- shorter-than-wrist-leng- th hand-knitted- Granulated honey can be restored to its natural form by placing it in hot water.
