Show New Teaching Program LEWIS LLEWELLYN Having invited friendly Chief Massasoit to join them, tJiey were astonished to find that he was accompanied by 90 braves. But they enjoyed the festive occasion so much that it was continued for three days. There is no record of such a in the following celebration year, but in 1623 Governor William Bradford issued a proclaInasmation in these words: much as the great Father has given us this year an abundant harvest . . . and has made the forests to abound with game and the sea with fish and clams, and inasmuch as He has protected us from the ravages of the savages, ha3 spared us from has and disease, pestilence granted us freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience; now I, your magistrate, do proclaim that the Pilgrims, with your wives and the little ones, do gather at the meeting house on the hill, between the hours of 9 and 12 in the daytime, on Thursday, November the 29th, of the year of our Lord one thousand six hundred and twenty-tand the third year since the Pilgrims landed on the Pilgrim Rock, there to listen to the pastor and render thanksgiving to the Almighty God for all His blessings. Choicest Bounties Perhaps this year, as we prepare to stuff ourselves with turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, and all manner of other delightful dishes, we should ponder the import of Governor Bradfords proclamation. In 1621, the Pilgrims observed their first a time to exThanksgiving press their gratitude to God for the bountiful harvest which they had just garnered. ;;Xj,w,',v,vv aimed at helping students become rational, effective, spiritual h u m a n beings, Is being launced by the Utah State Board of Education. According to Dr. Ferrln Van Waggoner, State Coordinator of Secondary Education, the programs purpose Is to help students gain understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to able handle lifes problems and actively demonstrate the effective use of these powers. A new program though all of us enjoy this feature of the annual occasion but it should include also a genuine expression of appreciation to the Lord for the bounties that He has showered on us. Abraham Lincoln expressed it well when he said, We have been the recipients of the choicest bounties of heaven. To a great extent Lincoln was right also when he said,iBut We have forgotten God." On this Thanksgiving Day, let's not forget God. Let's enjoy feasting with our families, but let's also thank God for the good things that are ours. Lets thank Him for the privilege of being citizens of this great nation. Lets ask Him to pardon us for not always ordering our lives in accordance with His righteous principles and call on Him to direct our way in the future. God Is Listening We are living in perilous times, when our nation is in danger which is not perceived by many. But Gods power is shown at its best in such circumstances. And God is always ready to listen to the prayer of the one who sincerely wants to trust in His protection and care. The God who shielded our forefathers in danger and difficulty is still waiting to hear our voices in thanksgiving and in request for guidance. What would have been the consequence if the Pilgrims had failed to recognize their dependence on God and to thank Him for His protection and care? Would history have recorded a different outcome? We may never know, because they did freely confess their reliance on the Almighty One and history records the success of their venture. God heard our forefathers, 350 years ago. Will He hear us today? Classroom Goes To Students If students cant come to the classroom, take the classroom to them. Thats the motto of an ongoing project managed by the San Juan School District and directed by the Utah State Board of Educations Division of Aduot Education and Training. For many Indians living on the Navajo Reservation In southeastern Utah,' education has been a case of catch as catch can. Classroom facilities had to be located near power sources which are scarce and far away from many Indian dwellings. Lack of transportation caused many Indians to loose the opportunity for any formal education. Now, however, mobile classrooms, In the form of contruck trailverted forty-fo- ot ers, are being brought onto the reservation. Two of the specially equipped trailers have been in use for a year and two more are being provided this week by the State Board of Edu- cations Division 3 school year. As a result, consumers must pay higher prices to compensate for the goods lost to thieves plus the cost of business security measures to discourage thefts. Stores across the country are spending millions of dollars for security programs ranging from chained-dowmerchandise to elaborate guard systems and electronic detection devices to halt thievery. During the 1960s larceny (theft of merchandise worth $50 and over) rose 199 percent and all burglary, from homes and commercial establishments, rose 117 percent, according to the latest FBI Crime Index. It was begun in the cabin of the Mayflower with the signing ofthe above compact. It established the worlds first government for and by the people. Although they could not have known what they were starting, the Pilgrims, with one stroke o' the pen, created the freedoms, the Justice, and the opportunities which have made America unique among the nations of the world. The Pilgrims left England to escape the yoke of religious persecution to find a place In the wilderness where they might walk In alt His ways, whatever the cost. And in all simplicity and humility, this they did. The Pilgrims brought God to these shhres as a partner, comforter, and friend. They brought the Holy Bible as their guide. America was born a Christian nation, thanks to them. They loved God and they loved order. We fell heir to their priceless legacy by their faith and their blood, which they gave that we might be free. Our American holiday of Thanksgiving is traced to this Plymouth colony, but the ideals much older. The origin ofthe custom of setting aside a time of thanksgiving to God is lost in the mists of time. There are repeated references to expressions of thanksgiving In the Old Testament. Noah, delivered from the flood, erected an altar to the Lord In thanksgiving. One can uncover in history many a poignant tableau of thanksgiving. In Revelation we can journey to the island of Patmos and join a prisoner, named John, to behold a future thanksgiving scene that spans the dimensions of time and space, to generate hope and new life In the weariest of human of law ideal Christ- e mas gift or stocking-stuffe- r is this unique, new, toy car made by Structo, the pioneer toy manufacturer. The study suggests that many high school students are rejectar ing the idea that a four-yedegree Is necessary tocompete In today's labor market. It also Implies that more high school students feel that vocational training Is as valuable as a degree In the arts or theoretical sciences. The survey reports, for Instance, that 61 percent of this i year's graduates Intend to go to college. Last year, 70 percent of the graduating seniors wanted to enter college. During the same time, the percentage of students Intending to start work Immediately after graduation has risen from 12 to 16 percent. The percentage of students desiring vocational tralninghas also risen this last year. Nine percent of this years graduating class Intends to enter a vocational school as opposed to eight percent for last year. This same trend Is reflected in enrollment and class distribution figures from Utah's Technical Colleges at Salt Lake and Provo. Fall reports Indicate that day-tienrollment at both colleges has Increased Last year, day considerably. enrollment at the Technical College at Provo was 1472; this year Its 1803. At the Technical College at Salt Lake, daytime attendance jumped from 1810 to 2265 during the one-ye- ar span. Even more revealing are the figures from the two colleges indicating which classes students are signing up for. Building Construction classes at the Salt Lake school, for Instance, increased this last year by nearly 140 percent. Refrigeration classes at the same school have increased by more than 100 percent during the same ; period. Similar figures have been reported from the Technical College at Provo. The welding class has grown from 36 to 65 students this year. Machine shop matriculation has Increased from 19 to 27.
