All organizations within the city are scheduled to handle a phase of the celebration. The Jaycettes have been handed the contest for determining those who will reign over the big event. During the past years a Goddess of Liberty contest 'has been sponsored for this phase but the 1965 event will see a change. The contest this year will feature a King and Queen and they must be between the ages of five and eight years. Mrs. Vernal Mortensen has been named chairman and will be assisted by Mrs. Rae Noyes Jr., and Mrs. Eugene Tidlund. Entries are being asked from each club and organization. The Salina Riding Club were first to select their candidates. Leonard Heaps, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dar Heaps and Susan Madsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Madsen will represent the organization. Voting will be the same as for the Goddess of Liberty, one cent for each vote. Voting containers with the pictures of the contestants will be placed in business houses and residents are urged to choose their favorites and back them with the pennies. Scholarship Is Awarded to Ray Williams Ray Williams, teacher of advanced mathematics at Mark Keppel High School, Alhambra, Calif., has been awarded a scholarship to the Academic Year Institute at Boston College in Massachusetts. The grant to Boston College, bestowed by the National Science Foundation, has been made to only 28 secondary school teachers this year. The program for Mr. Williams, which will last from Sept. 13, 1965 to Aug. 5, 1966, involves a year of intensive study in mathematics. The Foundation pays for all school expenses, provides a travel allowance, and supplies a basic stipend for the Williams family. During holidays when the college is not in session, Mr. Williams and his family plan to travel around the East. At the end of the year of study Mr. Williams will receive his Masters Degree in mathematics and will return to high school teaching.
