DECEMBER YEAR FORTY-FIFT- Long Illness Claims Life Of Lighting Contest Is Announced Salina Junior Chamber of announced this week their annual Christmas lighting contest for residents. All outdoor lighting will be judged on the night of Dec. 22nd between 6 and 10 p.m., announced the club president. Bill Crane. Everyone is eligible and the theme is "Spirit of Christmas." Each resident who has outdoor lights is reminded to turn them on during the hours and on the date specified if they are to be judged. Prizes will be: $25.00, 1st place; $15.00 second place, and $10.00, third place. Commerce Mrs. W. Lloyd Johnson Heads Utah Cowbelles Stanley D. Burgess President Election of officers and presentation of resolutions highlighted the concluding sessions of the Utah Cattlemens Association and Utah Cowbelles annual convention, Saturday in Salt Lake City. Stanley D. Burgess, Salina, was president of the Utah Cattlemen together with his vice presidents, Allan N. Adams, Randolph and A. D. Findlay, Kanab. Max H. Anderson of Tremon-to- n was named Livestockman of the Year by the Utah Future Farmers of America, and E. S. Gardner, 72, was named of the year by the assoOld-Tim- er ciation. The Cattlemen also passed a resolution suggesting an import quota on livestock stating they were faced by an alarming increase from Australia and New Zealand which had dropped market prices from 27 and 28 cents in 1962 to 21 cents today. Also asked in a resolution was legislation which would authorize governmental agencies to compensate individuals affected by reductions or cancellations of grazing permits controlled by those agencies. They asked that no further reductions be made on either Forest Service or Bureau of Land Management administered lands until all other means of range management and rehabilitation had been used. Another resolution asked the Secretary of the Interior to reterms for BLM turn to three-yeboards, stating that advisory terms are too short to gain effectiveness. They also asked the Forest Service and BLM make water development sites available for increasing irrigation water in Utah and neighboring states. Cowbelles Mrs. W. Lloyd Johnson of Aurora was elected president during the Utah Cowbelles convention, succeeding Mrs. Dick of Sigurd. Vice presidents include: Mrs. Dwight Malmgren, Gunnison; Mrs. Grant Larsen, Spanish Fork; Mrs. Elmo Hoyt, Kamas. Mrs. Floyd Johnson of Aurora is the new secretary-treasurear one-ye- ar Pro-be- rt r. A highlight of the Utah Cowbelles convention was the awarding of a $100 scholarship to the college of her choice to Miss Sue Ann Lytle of St. George. Miss Lytle was selected as Miss Utah Cow Belle. The scholarship fund was contributed by First State Bank of Salina, $50; Utah Livestock Market Association, $25, and Johnson Livestock, $25. Phone Employee Honored For Saving Youngster An employee of the Mountain States Telephone was honored Dec. 10 for action which saved the life of a per boy. four-year-o- Dra- ld Norma G. Schneider, a plant clerk in the Salt Lake Office, was presented with a coveted Vail Medal accompanied by a $250.00 cash award, by L. L. Plant Manager for the company, during a luncheon held in Le-ge- r, her honor. The Vail Medal is the highest award for public service that can be earned by a telephone employee. The award was established in 1920, as a memorial to Theodore N. Vail, former president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. It is given to telephone men and women in recognition of meritorious and outstanding service requiring good judgment and heroic action. Last May 15, about 7:00 p.m., Miss Schneider was on her way to a church meeting in Draper with a friend when they heard Mrs. Mary Norman shout, Is there a man around? She, with her friend and others in the neighborhood, drove in their car to the canal where Miss Schneider dashed from the auto and ran along the canal bank until she came to where the small boy, half submerged, was floating face down in the canal. Everyone, both old and young is invited to come and join in the fun. Members of the Centennial Orchestra are: LaVon Christensen, Briant Burgess, Leander Shurtz, Mrs. Virgil Anderson and Henry Sorenson. Christmas Program In Salina 1st Hard Final preparations are underway for an outstanding Christmas program, to be presented in the Salina First Ward Chapel, December 23rd at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Wilma Sorensen is heading the program and promises an outstanding entertainment to put the audience in a fitting mood for the holiday season. Eighty individuals will appear in the entertainment and will feature Mrs. Klar Oldroyd of Richfield as the narrator. Ferrel Huntsman will serve as Santa Claus with David Noyes as Joseph; Kay S. Snyder as Mary; Brad Rasmussen, Redgie Hansen, Johnny Albrecht and Brent Burr as wisemen. Richard Anderson and Boyd Lambertson will be the shepherds. Mrs. Gerald Johnson of Aurora will sing two solos, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Arno Bastian. Both are former ward members. Extensive lighting and decorating will emphasize the program with Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Rasmussen taking charge of this department. Primary Officers Entertain Teachers The Gifts of Christmas was the theme of the Christmas party given Saturday night by the Salina First Ward Primary Presidency, Mrs. Jack Learning, Mrs. Robert Jensen and Mrs. Wayne Burr. They entertained the Primary teachers and their husbands. Places were set for 26 at the dinner. Music was by the Ann Learning, Geri Lyn Sorenson and Geraldine Jensen, A Christmas Story by Mrs. Dwrane Dastrup and games led by Mrs. Joe Springer and Mrs. Bud Camp comprised the eve- nings entertainment Alfred Lloyd Curtis, 61, prominent Sevier County livestock-ma- n and farmer and a resident of Aurora until two years ago, died at 12:10 a.m. December 7th in Salt Lake City following a long illness. Mr. Curtis was born June 8, 1902 in Aurora, the son of Alfred and Margaret Anderson Curtis. He attended the local schools and was active in community life. December 16, 1933 he married Maxine Morrison in Salt Lake City. Funeral services were held Saturday in Fillmore for Elmer Lyman Day, 80, who died in a Salt Lake rest home Wednesday night of causes incident to age. Mr. Day was born March 8, 1883, at Deseret, Millard County, a son of James and Emma Mitchell Day. He married Laurie Brunson Oct. 24, 1901 at Fillmore. She died November 2, 1953. Mr. Day was a member of the LDS Church. Dressed weight of the 1963 birds amounted to Turkey Growers, Inc., processing plant in Salina completed their 1963 run December 9th with poundage total just a little smaller than 1962 but with more birds going through. The growers marketed their birds at a little less weight this year making for the small difference. Processing began April 30th and the plant operated much of the time until the final bird was killed Monday. Farrell Crane, plant supervisor, stated a total of 401,111 birds had pounds. The plant employed an average of 133 with a total payroll of $200,000. Heart Attack Takes Life Of Jabez Jensen Jabez Jensen, 70, prominent Redmond resident, died suddenly at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday night at his home in Redmond from an apparent heart attack. Mr. Jensen had gone to bed and was talking to his wife when stricken. He was born March 20, 1893 in Ft. Green, the son of Jacob H. and Anna Elizabeth Hansen Jensen. They came to Redmond about 45 years ago and he had been active in farming and live- . stock. April 22, 1925 he married Leda Jensen in the Manti Temple. Mr. Jensen was an elder in the LDS Church and prominent in his community. Survivors include his widow, Redmond; one son, Ellis Lee Jensen, Salt Lake City; two grandchildren; two sisters and one brother, Cyrus Jensen.
