In front of the hotel, Jean Ragland's pony stood. He hajJ seen this girl htft half a dozen times In his life; yet she had singled him out today to aid her In a tiling which he did not yet fully understand. She had been surrouiyled by friends, by men she had known all her life; even her own father had been there. Yet, for some obscure reason she had turned to him. J$an Ragland sat her pony with the easy lax grace of young muscles raised In the saddle. Now that She was In her own element again she no longer looked frail and small, as she had In the crush of the Inquest, but competent and at home on her horse, as he had known her before. As she passed she looked straight at the window where he stood, and Kentucky believed that she saw him there; but she gave no sign. He turned back to the sheriff. Floyd Hopper smoked morosely In the shadows brought by the closing of the eurly dusk. "If you want togo out to the Bar Hook for me, I can make It worth your while. Ill make my play, and I'll make it slick. In the meantime think twice, you, before you buck me! You can make plenty trouble If you want; I've got no doubt of that. But its you that'll burn If you do!" "Reassure yourself," Kentucky told him. "If I cant make a finish play. Ill make no play at all." I dont know," said the sheriff, "but what youll go a little farther than that if you know what's good for you. "You d "Thats so. "Bar Hook?" Protection or no protection," KenI wont tucky Jones said shortly, touch It. As far as Campo Ragland's mean? The sheriff's voice was low, but bis words had more force than If he had thundered. "I mean you'll sit out of this altogether." "I told you what I'm going to do, Kentucky said shortly. He was In a hurry now to be on his way; he waited to hit the Bar Hook road before the final closing of the dark. The sheriff shouted at him, You Infernal The door came open, shuddering as It broke clear from the Ice that had formed at the sill. The man who stamped the snow off his boots upon the threshold was straight-hacke; and his age was Indeterminate he might have been forty, or he might have been knife-carve- d much more. He bad a clean-cut- , face, set with blue eyes as clear and penetrating as sharp bits of lee. And he radiated a driving, thrusting energy, so definite as to convey an almost physical sense of Impact. Floyd Hopper said without warmth, "Hello, Elliot; and Kentucky Jones said, Howdy, Bob. Kentucky Jones had always been on good terms with Bob Elliot before; but now Elliot looked over the other with a coolly noncommittal eye. I heard," Bob Elliot said, you got yourself a Job today?" Yes. The boss of the 88 looked Kentucky over again slowly, with a certain bleak irony. Then abruptly he turned away, breaking into the painful-soundincachinnatlons which passed with him for laughter. It consisted of a shaking of shoulders and a series of coughing sounds, accompanied by a general look, but no expained, cracked-upression of enjoyment While this went on he always turned away fronr his companions as if the unaccustomed onslaught in truth seized him against g p his will. The paroxysm died away. And with face like that, Bob Elliot was able to say at last Oh, naturally Oh, of course!" I've found It a useful face for fighting a wolf," Kentucky agreed Still, I don't see equably. Just the brand, said Bob Elliot, that always goes loco over the nearest gimlet-headegirl." There was quiet while a man could count fifteen. Im going to finish rolling this cigarette," said Kentucky Jones, and Im going to roll It right Then Im going to see If I still feel the same way about that last remark. And If I do Im going to smash your teeth down your throat. "Maybe you are, said Bob Elliot, without emotion. Floyd, I hear somebody rustled the bullet that killed John Mason." Uh, huh." said Hopper. "Im not sure that I saw that done, said Elliot, disregarding KenFloyd, tucky now, hut I think maybe that I did ; and I think so more and more." Sheriff Floyd Hopper came awake. Who was It?" I dont want to name a name, said Rob Elliot, unless we can make a test to see If Im right. If Im right, the party that took the bullet passed It on to another; and I dont think this second one passed It on. I dont know but what hes just dumb enough to have It still." And where Is It?" said the sheriff. "I think," Bob Elliot said, that you'll find the bullet that killed Mason In the clothes of this man here: Kentucky Jones." ' The three were motionless for a moment. The sheriff stared from one of them to the other. Look here "That settles It," said Kentucky. He smashed Rob Elliot across the face with his open hand. The owner of the 83 staggered against the wall, spun half around with the weight of that slap. Jones said, Take care of yourself. Elliots hand made a whipping snatch at the gun at his right thigh as Kentucky struck again, this time with his closed left hand. Elliots head snapped back ; he seemed to teeter for a moment, face upward, then buckled at the knees and went to the floor like a dropped saddle blanket. For G ds sake get ont of here, said the sheriff. "Get out or this town I He'll kill you when he comes up." (TO BE CONTINUED) a 1 d Elliot's Head Snapped Back. Its pretty near too much to ask a man to step square Into the makings of a range war thats none of your own. Those of us who might he interested In science's quest to deter mine the exact nature of the typical American so far as his physical makeup is concerned, probably will find some small comfort In the theory of Professor Albert E. Jenks, a noted anthropologist of the University of Minnesota. The gist of Professor Jenks' opinion Is that whatever the number of con flicting conceptions might exist at the moment as to the physical Identity of the American, the time i; not too far distant when he will have a definite and recognizable racial classification. The typical American, according to Professor Jenks, will not be a tall blond person, as some might have supposed. He will be only fairly tall, dark eyed, and darker skinned than the pres ent average. This, he asserts, will lie the ultimate outcome of the interbreeding among the early and late arrivals on this continent. Upon tlie whole, If Professor Jenks theory Is well foun.ded, the typical American will not lie an unattractive person, assuming of course, that he Incorporates a portion of the better physical qualities of each of the racial strain that make him. Mans concern over the question of what he is, as well as what he does, is not motivated soiely Ivy considerations of vanitj. Curiosity also plays Its part. In seeking the Hellene of the classicist and the Roman of the Etruscan line he finds them not in the Greek and Italian of today. He becomes giddy, striving to follow the ancient medley of races that swarmed and Intermingled on the Spanish peninsula. In striving to trace his family lineage he Is dismayed by the piultltude of his nwn ancestors, enough to populate a small city within a surprisingly few generations. In any event, andwhatever we of America might eventually become, there Is comfort In the thought that we shall be a definite something. Since we are a nation, there Is little reason why we should not also be a race; and It must be acknowledged that there Is some excellent material here. Manchester (N.
