With the big rush of mailing parcels, cards and letters and Christmas tokens, all are asked to work in conjunction with the postal officers, thus facilitating in getting the mail to the destination on time. Mail early, write plain addresses and .observe the general rules ouutlined by the first assistant postmaster at Washington, D. , and it will be a material help in getting the tons and tons of matter which will be handled during the yuletide season through on time. Wrapping and packing of all parcels must be secure. Use strong paper and twine, and fragil articles easily broken, extra care should be taken. Wrap such articles Jrith' excelsior! or like material and use strong containers that will not easily crush. Articles that are likely to spoil .within the time, resonably required .for transportation and delivery, will not be accepted for mailing. Wrap or pack carefully, according to contents and. plainly mark Perishable," and use stamps to ' . expedite delivery. All addresses should be complete," with house number and name of e street, postoffice box or number. Either type or plainly write in ink all addresses. A return card should be placed in the upper left comer of every piece of mail. Postage must be fully prepaid on all mail and it is asked that the required amount to transport the package be placed in the upper right corner. During the holiday time the volume of mail increases .approximately 200 per cent. It is a physical impossibility to handle this great mass of mail matter efficiently and promptly within a few days. Therefore to insure delivery of their Christmas presents, cards and letters by Christmas Day the public should SHOP AND MAIL EARLY. Do your Christmas shopping so that you can mail your gifts, greetings, and letters to relatives, friends, and loved ones at least a week or 10 days before Christmas, according to the distance. This will not only make it certain that they are received on . or before Christmas -- Day, but will" be a great aid to your postal service and to postal employees and enable them to spend Christmas, Day with .their families. The annual election of offic- ers for the Salina farm bureau, which was scheduled for last Monday eveinng, and which was postponed due to other activities, will be held at the First ward chapel Saturday evening. Un the lust of December the wholesale quotation of one New York refiner touched 5.50 cents a pound while throughout the centraj and western states the ruling price since the first of the month has basis. The been 5.40 cents in interior lower basis prevailing markets is due to the movement of beet sugar from factories located in northern states from Ohio and jyi;chjgan in the East to California in the West, This BUgar comes on the market each year during October or November and usually results in a decrease of all prices. This year the beet sugar crop is the largest that has been made in this country since 1924 and the beet sugar factories at present are supplying the bulk of the sugar being sold from the Pacific Coast eastward to New York and Pennsylvania. While the beet sugar plants are turning out over 2,000,000,000 pounds of sugar they supply only about of what the country uses during the year and the only time when this sugar dominates the market sufficiently to affect the general price of the commodity is between October and January which is the manufacturing season for this sugar. At other times the price is fixed by sugar imported from Cuba and refined in the big seaboard refineries, the imported sugar constituting about CO per cent of the countrys annual supply. be- - sea-boa- rd er - - vice-preside- nt . ry one-fif- self-suppo- ... (Continued on page five) ( ! J I " re-th- e ff st Fire, which borke out in the camp and boarding house of the Utah Construction company in Salina canyon early last Sunday morning, resulted in a loss of nearly $2,000 in equipment and provisions and also in the suspension of work on the grading for several days. The fire was discovered about three oclock Sunday morning by thenightwatchman. He gave the alarm and soon the workmen, who were sleeping in different quarters, were on the scene, but were powerless to quench the blaze, as no water wa3 available. According to reports, the replenished the fire in a stove with fuel, and continued his rounds of inspection about the camp. Severeal minutes after building the fire and when some distance away from the camp house, he discovered the flames rapidly eating their way through the structure. As. to how the blaze was started, has not yet been determined. The building was built of lumber, the roof being covered with tar paper. All the provisions, which comprised a goodly supply, cooking utinsels, stoves and the bedding and furniture used by the chief officers of the company, in the sleeping quarters, together with instruments, were a total loss. George Bowman, superintending operations for the "Utah Construction company, was absent, having been called to Ogden on account of the illness of his daughter. When advised of the fire, ha gave instructions to immediately rebuild the camp, and forwarded the necessary supplies from Ogden. The camp outfit came in Tuesday, and a crew of men completed a new building Tuesday evening and work is going ahead as usual. Some fifty men were employed at the camp as a grading crew, and it was necessary to take a forced vacation until the camp was rebuilt. The building and contents were Insured sufficiently, it Is said, to cover the losses sustained by the fire. night-watchm- CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY Sarah Long was the gracious hostess at a family dinner, in commemoration of her birthday anniversary at the Long home Sunday.
