JOSIAII F. MARTIN A Tribute to a Real Man In the passing of Josiah F. Martin Salina has lost one of its noblest . citizens. A pioneer of this community in every respect he lived to witness a wonderful transformation from a small and insignificant beginning to what is now a happy and prosperous community. Through all the hardships and dangers incident to pioneer life he was always ready to meet all emergencies in his wontd good humor, free from and the use of harsh words that migh1 have woundede the most tender senI sibilities. naa most of His was optomistic ture. He always looked on the bright er side of life and thought his a happj lot with no reason for complaint when he compared his condition with millions of others not so favorably situated. He responded nobly to all circumstances, and always at his post of duty doing the right as God gave him the light to see the right. To me he was always an inspiration and am quite sure that all whoever came in contact with his sympathetic and wholesome nature, will now cal. his name blessed and feel that theii lives have been made better and happier by having known him. His was one of those characters that would rather suffer wrong thar. do another an injury, in full accord with the Master's teachings, though a rule of action difficult to follow in this hardened and selfish world. He never to my knowledge talked abou4 what the world owed him, the happiness he deserved, and all that, but was always on the alert to see how efficiently he could render service to his fellow man in the ordinary walks of life, whether in his dealings with the members of his own religious faith or strangers to that faith. I doubt whether any living or dead could charge him with having done them an intended wrong, for his natural impulse was to help his fellow-mawithout regard to private or public approval. The kind act or word done cheerfully was in itself, to him, its own reward. One of the surest indexes to a man5 character is in his home life, and, in this respect to my veiwrpoint, his was ideal. He did his full duty in rearing and bringing to man and womanhood the children born to him by his first marriage and later assumed the duties of rearing a second family the obligations which were faithfully performed. Both families are an asset to the community, county, state and nation as they are loved, respec ed and honored by all that come in contact with them. His children from now on will miss his guiding hand but if they will follow the admonitions of his tutelege they run no risk of going wrong in the future. I do not know what more I could say about a man whom I admired so much but to express the hope that as years pass there may be many more like him than there are today which will make the world a more fit and better place in which to live. n J.
