Speaking at the annual meeting of the American Council on Alcohol Problems (ACAP), Dr. Richard P. Lindsay cited recent successful efforts to control the sale and consumption of beer, and commended them to the Council. From ball parks to beaches, new laws and rules have slowly been emerging to better control this beverage and its consequences, Lindsay said. He mentioned tough beer control efforts by the San Francisco Giants baseball club, the beach city of Santa Cruz, CA and others. . The Giants recently banned all beervending in the stands of Candlestick Park; while an alcohol free beach ordinance was passed on the Santa Cruz beaches, reducing the number of brawls from 41 to 6, allowing lifeguards more lime to do their job. While the consumption of wine and distilled spirits cause similar tragedy and heartache, beer accounts for more than half of the alcohol consumed in the U.S. and it is The most promulgated and least regulated of all alcoholic products, Lindsay noted. Research indicates that 5.8 billion gallons of beer were consumed in the U.S. in 1986 alone. Adding to 24 gallons each for every man, woman and child in the country. That s more than the per capita consumption of fruit juices, drink mixes, wine and distilled spirits combined, Lindsay noted. Even though retail beer sales in 1986 totaled more than $39 billion, that figures pales alongside the estimated $120 billion in alcohol, abuse social costs, Dr. Lindsay noted, including mortality, reduced productivity, health care costs, prop erty loss, crime and incarceration. Lindsay condemned theunre-- 1 lenting flood of beer advertising -and the infusion of beer into the very ' fabric of American culture, particularly in sports. In 1987, $847 million was spent in the U.S to advertise beer, more than double the figure eight , years ago. Lindsay says that linking beer to sports has a particularly negative effect on young people. Our youth are bombarded with beer advertising. There are about 500 liquor licenses in the state of Utah, but there are nearly 2,500 outlets for selling beer. Dr. Jerry Caldwell, director of the Alaska Sports Medicine Clinic said that of 1 3 million alcoholics in the U.S., more than three million are in the 14 to 17 age group. The majority of beer advertising is done through television. Last year, TV accounted for 73 of total ad spending by beer marketers. Radio is second with 18. The majority of beer advertising is sports related. The number one brewery, Anheuser-Busc- h spends $344 million on advertising with two thirds of this directly linked to sports. It has sponsorship associations throughout major sports including all U.S . based major league baseball teams, 20 of the 28 NFL teams and over 300 college sports teams. It also sponsors around 1,000 individual events, leagues, and competitions from to boat races and bowling tournaments. One study notes that ...beer commercials promote a particular view of what it means to be a man .. .that to be a real man and to accepted among other men..one must drink beer. In our view, this is a powerful, distorted, and dangerous message to broadcast to young people, Lindsay explained. commended Lindsay the ACAP members for their courage , and moral character in seeking ways and means to limit the damage done to society by beer and other alcoholic beverages. Yourl2year olddaughterprepares toracehomeat the crack of a bat. Theres the pitch - the hit - the collision at home plate and a tooth from your childs winning smile lies poised on the base. What to do? Get that tooth, urges Dr. Michael Goldstein, DDS, of the Academy of General Dentistry. It can be reimplanted with a good chance of success. Your dentist will wire the loose tooth to its neighbors until it reattaaches. So, very gently wash off any dirt from the tooth; put it into its socket and hold it there, or if your child can stomach it, keep the tooth protected by placing it between his or her cheek or gum. For a very dirty tooth, dont scrub, but put into milk (best) or water. Get to a dentist fast, within two hours at the most. If you cant contact your dentist, go to an emergency room at a hospital. -- Assistant Park Supt. is named The Utah Division of Parks and Recreation announces the selection of David Lucchesi as Assistant Park Superintendent for Fremont Indian State Park. American Heart Association WE'RE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE Is For years there has been much attention placed on personality and its correlation with illness. Type As, research studies indicate, are usually high strung, high pressured and at a higher risk for heart attack and stroke. Now, researchers are looking at other personality traits which affect ones health - optimism and pessimism. Is the glass half full or half empty? To the optimist the glass is half full. Its this kind of thinking that helps individuals overcome stressful situations and thereby reduce the risk of illness and disease. Michael Schcicr, psychology professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, and Charles Carver, psychologist at the University of Miami, have conducted personality studies of college students, coronary bypass patients and recovering alcoholics in an after care program. They found that optimism and pessimism have a lot to do with what people do, how they feel about themselves and their ability to cope with difficulties in their lies. By developing a scale to measure optimism and pessimism they were able to compare a persons attitude and the status of their health. the people with a They found of general feeling optimism handled stress better, recovered faster after bypass surgery and were more successful in completing treatment for alcoholism. The new reporting system, to be finalized by December of 1989, is designed to develop an expanded timber cost accounting system nationwide for the Forest Service. Initial results show that the Fiscal Year 1987 harvest of 464 million board feet of timber and related products produced revenue of $16,048,218, at a cost of $27,950,272, Tixier reported. The timber harvest also generated 4,665 jobs in the Region, with an income of $88,99 1,087, he noted. They engage in emotion-focuse- d coping, rather than truly dealwith the problem. ing Pessimists are more in tune with reality, Sheier said, But as a consequence of that, they could expose themselves to more information and be mores stressed. Optimists tend to block out the bad news or negative issues and go on. Carver adds thatoptimism is more than just reading the best into a situation; its a matterof believing that really good things will happen.
