Show Aurora Firehouse Dedicated The newly built Aurora Departments Fire House and Fire Aur- ora City Hall were dedicated in ceremonies last Saturday morning and afternoon. An open house was held all day for visiting residents, firemen and dignitaries. The dignitaries included Sevier County Commissioner Merlin T. Ashman. Aurora volunteer firemen led people on tours of the new facility which cost nearly $60,000, much of it donated in money and labor. The organizer and fust fire chief of the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department - was Flank Crowe who started the ball rolling for the new fire house three years ago. Crowe acquired the first fire truck and started making arrangements for the rebuilding of a second fire truck. The construction of the fire house was started under Crowes leadership. Before his term ended, work was started on a smaller rebuilt fire truck and the first rebuilt truck was equipped. Smokey the Bear shook hands with children and gave away lollipops to hungry visitors. . 1 Mayor Larry Cosby delivered the dedicatory speech in the new Fire Houses training center. Retiring Councilman Dan Thompson followed with the dedicatory prayer. Following the prayer, the entourage headed outside where the ribbon was officially cut by Mayor Cosby. Under the leadership of current Fire Chief Royce Mason, the firehouse was completed largely with the volunteer help of many citizens and firemen either through monetphysical ary contributions and-o- r labor. The firemen donated personally more than 5,000 man hours to the building, about 500 hours to the rebuilding of the large trade and about 400 hours to the rebuilding of the smaller trade. The need for a fire department was expressed as early as 1975, according to Mayor Cosby in his dedicatory address. In September of 1975 a survey was taken in Aurora, he said, and fire protection was at the top of the list. W ith this in mind, he related, a fire engine was given to Aurora by the Forest Service. Repair was started to make the engine useful to the dty. In 1978, Mayor Cnsby said, fire hydrants were installed throughout the town as part of the culinary water project. On July 15, 1981, the Aurora Fire Dept, officially was organized with Frank Crowe as its first fire chief. In 1982, applications were made to try to obtain grant funds to build a firehouse. Those applications were turned down, the mayor said, because the givers felt that Aurora at this time did not warrant a firehouse, but our community wa--( Continued on Page 6) Ribbon Cutting at Aurora Firehouse Mayor Larry Cosby cuts the ribbon to officially open and dedicate the new Aurora City Volunteer Fire House and City Hail.
