Passing school buses when their red lights are flashing is not an uncommon situation. It is, obviously a dangerous situation, and one which should not be tolerated. It has been two years since a child in Sevier County was injured while getting off a school bus. Considering the number of students who board and alight from school buses very day, the injury rate is low. It should, however, be zero, and if drivers involved in striking children around buses were following the law , the rate Some people are just not quite with the program. Of course, it depends on what the program is as to how with it they are. Lets face it. There are some things in this world that some of us are just a little slow with. In fact, everyone has something that must give him a tut of trouble. Well, when a person is faced with this sort of dilemma, we dont question his sanity, nor do we challenge his intelligence. Rather, we have simple phrases that seem to get the point across quite well, without being too rude. would be zero. The law is very clear on the school bus issue. When a bus has its red lights flashing, drivers from both to are required directions stop and remain stopped until those lights are off and it is also otherwise safe to move again. Since we are in a rural area, most of the students riding school buses are being transported to smaller towns and along the highway where their homes are located. This means buses stop nearly anyplace there is a student residing, including busy U.S. Highway 89 in Sevier and Piute counties and Utah 24 in Wayne County. There is little mistaking that big yellow vehicle as a school bus, so caution should already be in the drivers mind. But when those flashing red lights go on, that means just one thing: a child is either getting onto or off of that vehicle. Despite the training and warnings which youngsters too, make mistakes, and sometimes dart onto the road from behind a bus. Thus law. the reason for the bus-sto- p It is an impossibility to expect compliance to the law in any situation. But we feel it is obvious that some measures, if taken by law enforcement officers, can drastically reduce violations. One of the easiest is to have patrolmen around school . bus loading zones at the beginning and end of the school day when buses arrive and leave school. Those times are constant and if officers want to make some arrests helping to make others aware that they mean business they can be there any school day. Another would be for bus drivers to get license numbers and vehicle descriptions of those who violate the law. Any bus driver who sees a vehicle go around his bus while those red lights are flashing, should care enough to do something about it. are constantly receiving, they, 100-perce- nt CHILDRENS PERFORMING GROUP O SINGING O MUSICAL THEATRE DANCE o MUSIC THEORY We all know that when someone is running a few quarts low, were not referring to oil, and when someone is a few bricks shy a load, its not bricks were really talking about.
