Show Vol.58 North Sevier Royalty Selected At Saturday Night Pageant lv Karen McMillan was chosen from 12 contestants as the new Miss North Sevier at a pageant held Saturday night at North Sevier High School. Miss McMillan will reign for 1979-8- 0 and will represent the area in the Miss Utah competition. She received her crown from Brenda Larsen, the previous holder of the title. A student at Snow College, Miss McMillan is a 1978 graduate of North Sevier High School. She makes her home in Salina with her guardians, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Miller. She performed a dance as her talent in the pageant, organized by the North Sevier Jaycet-tes- . Festival Of The Arts Premieres Here Tonight Festival of the Arts premieres tonight at North Sevier High School with a concert, play, displays and demonstrations. The evening, part of the statewide celebration of Festival of Arts for the Young, begins at 7 p.m. with a band concert in the new gymnasium. Following the concert, which should be about a half-hou- r, a one-aplay, Eh!, will be performed in the auditorium. Cast members are Brian Dumas, Anna Bretz, Jane Spainhower, John Anderson and Preston Steiger. Next installment in the festival will be in the old gymnasium, and includes ct Agencies To Conduct Workshop For Federal And State Aid In Salina and of other agencies representatives eligible for federal and state aid will be held at I p.m. Friday, April 27, at the A workshop for all public officials American Legion Hall in Salina. The Six County Economic District is sponsoring the workshop, which includes guest lecturers with extensive experience in the areas of financing, according to Courtney Larsen, director of the district. Purpose of the workshop is to provide specific information to local governments and eligible organizations on all possible ways to finance current and future projects. The workshop faculty includes Skip Glines, a representative from Sen. Jake Garns staff, who will give an overview of financial assistance from federal displays from the art, home economics, and other departments, as well as a demonstration of gymnastics and dancing. A North Sevier meeting is scheduled following the festival. Officers for the coming year will be elected. P-T- A How Important Are Children? How important agencies; Mike Chitwood, a grants inspecialist, who will address tax crement financing. P-T- A With Utah Highway Patrol troopers ordered to give no leeway on the 55 mile per hour speed limit, local motorists would do well to make sure the speedometer in their trusty transportation reads accurately. Bud G. Larsen, Salina UHP trooper, said two speedometer check points will be operated between 5 and 6 p.m. Friday, April 27. Motorists may check in with the trooper on duty for instructions, then drive through the radar to determine check if their speedometer reading jibes with the speed gun. One check point will be located one mile west of Salina on Utah 50, and the other will be on the airport road south of Richfield, Larsen said. In an effort to cut fuel consumption, Gov. Scott Matheson ordered the 55 mile per hour limit strictly enforced. shifts Troopers will be on during the next two weeks, rather than the standard 8 hours. There will be no more warnings given, Larsen explained, adding that the troopers really dont enjoy writing tickets to speeding drivers, and would prefer that everyone heed the drive 55 requirement. Following the two weeks of longer shifts, the highway commission will meet to evaluate the success of the program and decide what measures to take, Larsen said. Dean Black of Salina. Miss Marshall, a 1978 graduate of NSHS and a student at Brigham Young University, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Ross Marshall. The new queen received a $300 scholarship check and each attendant received a $100 scholarship check. All received gift certificates from Paulettes Smart Shop as well. The other contestants, who performed talent numbers and appeared in evening gown competition, were Stacee Roberts, Tammy Christensen, Brenda Kayleen Jensen Is Top Sterling Scholar Kayleen Jensen, a North Sevier High School senior, was chosen the Central Utah Sterling Scholar in general scholarship at the awards presentation April 18 in Richfield. She won a $200 cash scholarship, as well as a choice of a number of scholarships offered by Utah colleges and universities to Sterling Scholar winners. Miss Jensen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Jensen of Redmond, has a perfect 4.0 (straight A) average at NSHS. She won the coveted award in competition with finalists from eight other high schools, based on a personal interview with judges, and a portfolio she submitted. Students from 13 high schools compete in the Central Utah Sterling Scholar program. Twelve different areas of excellence are included in the competition. Finalists from North Sevier who also competed in the program were Chris Forsyth, social science; John Anderson, science; Kris Anderson, music; Alan Hansen, vocational; Neva Black, speech and drama; Lloyd Willardson, English; Stacey Edwards, business education; and Eric Sorensen, mathematics. The North Sevier woodwind choir performed Irish Tune from Country Dairy as part of the entertainment at the program. Salina IRA Rodeo Queen Contest To Select Queen For July 4th Applications are now being accepted from contestants for the 1979 Salina I.R.A. Rodeo Queen title. The contest to select a queen and two attendants to reign over the annual Salina I.R.A. rodeo on the Fourth of July is open to single girls who will be at least 18 years old and not more than 24 years old on Dec. 28. The queen and her two attendants also will participate in promotional activities, including the Richfield July 4 parade, the Salina July 4 parade, and the rodeo (July 2, 3, and 4 this year) and the Ute Stampede in Nephi. The queen also is eligible to participate in the Miss Rodeo U.S.A. Pageant in Tulsa, Okla. in January, 1980. Two previous Salina Rodeo Queens, Debbie White and Julie Herman, competed in the national pageant. Contestants for the title are judged on appearance, personality, and hor semanship. All contestants must possess the general qualifications of attractiveness, sincerity, integrity, intelligence, maturity, and high moral standards. The former Debbie White, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy White of Richfield, was the 1976 winner. Julie Herman, daughter of Mrs. Wanda Herman ol St. George, was the 1977 queen, and Jonie Carpenter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Carpenter of Syracuse, was the 1978 queen. She won over four other contestants. Young women interested in the North Sevier High has scheduled a Womans Career Day for Friday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to.l p.m. in the auditorium. Theme of the special day will be Support Yourself. Also speaking at the BLOCKED ENTRY-Highw- ay Patrol Officers from Salt Lake City blocked entryway to Brents Freeway Texaco & InterTire Center, located on the change, with large diesel trucks while conducting overweight checks on the. trucks. Brent Taylor, owner of the station, called the Sun last Thursday, April 19, to report that the officers were repeatedly allowing trucks to block and obstruct the entry to his station as they conducted the weight checks. Taylor I stated that he asked the officers to keep the trucks away from the entryway and conduct the checks where they wouldnt obstruct business, but was told to take Lions Slate Paper Drive it off his income taxes by one of the officers, but did move the vehicle from the entrance. It is lamentable that the Salt Lake Patrolmen were not able to show the courtesy that our citizens and businessmen are used to receiving from our own local Highway Patrol Officers in Sevier County. Salina Lions Club members will collect scrap paper and newspapers beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 28. Papers should be boxed or bundled and tied and placed on the curb in front of local residences. The Lions currently are hoarding the paper, storing it until the price increases. |
