Show ' The hulniii Sun, July ; Avoid Excessive Exposure To Sun Sunburns, premature wrinkles and the increased risk of skin cancer may not be the only reasons to avoid excessive sun exposure, says a University of Utah scientist. Chronic ultraviolet exposure radiation -- to the - wavelengths of light responsible for sunburns - may also modify the body's natural immune system and cause an increased vulnerability to many types of cancer. Garn Proposes Tax Cut For Homeowners his advice based on these findings is not new. "I have been telling people to limit their sun exposure for many years, or else save their money for a face lift and skin cancer treatments. Unfortunately, most people dont take this advice. -- Dr. A. Raymond associate Daynes, of professor pathology, has been working with an animal model system to the investigate effects of the immune ultraviolet light on system. Daynes and his research group have determined that , h mice exposed to the ultraviolet radiation needed to cause skin cancer were rendered susceptible to many types of tumors. Genetically identical mice not exposed to the UV radiation were capable of immunologically rejecting these same types of tumors. one-tent- The ability of chronic UV exposure to increase tumor susceptibility may be similar in mechanism to aging, where the ability to reject naturally arising tumors appears to decline, says Daynes. It is possible to induce tumor susceptibility with either single large exposures of UV or multiple smaller exposures administered over several weeks. It appears that once the critical threshold dosage is reached, the animals do not recover their resistance even though further UV exposure is terminated. At this time, we do not know the critical threshold of UV exDaynes posure in humans, says. I am in no way paranoid about being exposed to sunlight, but I dont recommend sunbathing simply for the sake of having a golden brown tan. Dermatologist Dr. Gerald G. Krueger, associate professor of internal medicine at the U, says "If chronic sun exposure is necessary, the best protection is a screening lotion containing Krueger says. But by then the damage may already be done." ELDER M1CHEAL S.
