Jed is currently a Senior at North Sevier High School where he belongs to the National I lonor Society and he has lettered academically his freshman, sophomore and junior year. He is also serving as this year's FFA president. Toelken believes that ballads and folksongs are poetry about the senses, values, and passions of everyday people w ho share a way of life. In his convocation presentation, he will focus on songs from the past and present that put historical events into cultural perspective. Toelken is Professor of English and of History and Director of the Folklore Program and the American Studies Graduate Program at Utah State University. A former president of the American Folklore Society, he is the author of The I s namics of Folklore and Morning Dew and Roses: Nuance, Metaphor, and Meaning in Folksongs, as w'ell as numerous articles on folklore, folksong, and Native American traditions.
