Pettis, Arizona State Game Warden, entered into an agreement on August 18 to secure the removal of as many excess deer as possible, pending the determination of a friendly suit in the Federal courts to decide the responsibility for conditions. There are at present some 30,000 deer within this preserve and the number is so great that the irrepar- able damage is being done to some 200,000 acres of small yellow pine and other trees on the Kaibab Na- tional Forest in which the preserve is located and to the forage from which the deer secure their most im- -' portant feed. This deer winter feed is the cliff rose, and it has been estimated that in excess of 60 per cent of this most important forage has already been killed by overgrazing by the deer.
