Show THE SALINA SUN, SALIN A, UTAH (Edited by O. Douglaa Wardrop, Editor of Radio Merchandising ) Leeds Back Home, Looking for a Job Wl'liam 15. Leeds, Jr., has come hack to the land of his birth and says he Is looking for a job. With him was his bride, Princess Xenia. The son of the late Princess Anastasia of Greece said that he hod returned to America to make his home, but that he had not decided where he was going to live. Mr. Leeds looked much better In health than he did on his previous visit, when he brought back the body of his mother. The young man has decided to give up Europe as a place of abode and to live In America. Although be has a fortune to spend, his friends say he has found life in the Old World Irksome and dull. Despite the royal affiliations erf his late mother and the fact that his wife is a princess, the young American believes true happiness can only be found In the land of ones birth, lie prefers democracy to the effete royal Institutions of Europe. Gossip has It that he probably will purchase a mansion in Washington with part of the legacy left him by his mother and will divide his time between the capital and New York. Later in the season he nnd Prl loess Xenia will be the guests of former Ambassador George Harvey on an excursion to Honolulu and other points. Young Leeds Is seeking profitable investments in America for the money his mother left him, which sum, in addition to the Interest on the $!(, (KM), tux) triM fund created by his father, comprises a legacy of $1,000,000 which he will receive at the age of thirty-fivMr. Leed's stepfather, Prince Christopher of Greece, will live In Italy. e. tviiimtMiiotMii Dun .moniiimMioioimiiiiinouimooiiiuiioinii inouiiouiiiiMnnono mini vmmhiii)iiiuomm4Miii"iiiiiiuiiiiiiium iiitiiiiiiiiuuMMioiintoMumiiiiiiiMi(MiuioiHuiiiiiutiimiiimimiiimnMMiuuU Best Practical Lesson on Road Safety Momnottiminiiiinumi minimum mnminmmn ioisiiohii mnimiimommiiimoimiHiiiiiMiimii iiiimumiMiouiunumo immumimmiiiu Miss Teresa M. The principle of the reflex circuit dee pends on the ability of a vacuum tube to permit currents of different frequencies to pass through It at the same time. The frequencies of the currents Induced in a radio antenna system are very rapid, varying In value from ubout 500 to per second, depending on wave lengths This current in the antenna system is generally termed the radio frequency current. In a reflex system these radio frequency currents are usually amplified to Increase their intensity before impressing them on the rectifier or detector, which converts these high frequency currents Into currents of audible frequency. After rectification these currents are then amplified as were the radio cure rents h v a vacuum tube. Here lies the particular advantage of the reflex system over other systems. In other systems, nfter rectification the rectified radio or audio currents are amplified by additional tubes for this purpose. In a reflex system before those Input radio frequency curd rents are rectified they are hack on the tubes which amplified them at radio frequency, and when rectified are reamplified at audio frequency before being passed on to the receivers or loud speaker to be converted to sound waves. There are a number of methods of utilizing the reflex principle, among which are the type of reflex wherein the reflex action proceeds from the Input to tlie output tube in direct progression nnd where the redox action is performed in more than one tube. Then there is the inverse duplex system wherein the reflex action is not progressive, but is Inverted back toward tiie Input tubes. In the Erla circuits t he reflex action is progressive from the input, but is only utilized in one tube. Due to the complexity of controlling radio frequency it is not possible to successfully stabilize a system wherein the reflex action is included In more than one stage. It is not a matter of balancing the loads in the various tubes, as it can lie readily shown that the loads caused by any audio signals on the tubes in these circuits are never such that the few three-electrod- 1,-0- kilo-cycl- reirn-presse- From This of radio signals additionally Impressed upon them would overload them as has been many times stated. In general there are practically two forms of using vacuum tubes as radio frequency amplifiers, I. e. the coupling transformers may be either tunable or fixed. The tunable type transformers are so designed that they may lie tuned, usually by a variable condenser In the other type the transformers cover a certain range without tuning. Tlie latter are broad and make for unselertive reception. It Is Imperative that if selectivity Is to be had where radio frequency amplification Is employed the coupling transformers must permit tuning adjustment by a variable tuning device such as a variable condenser. Because tlie transformer is actually tuned to tlie signal with this type of radio frequency not only great selectivity Is obtained, but greater amplification Is likewise secured. Either a vacuum tube, two or three electrode, or any of the many forms of crystal rectifiers of high frequency currents can be used as a rectifier, we are told. However, in a reflex circuit, due to the particular location in the circuit and Inherent characteristics of the detector, a crystal rectifier will be more satisfactory. By the use of the proper crystal rectifier an excellent controlling effect on the stability of the entire circuit may he had. Tlds feature Is not generally known, but Is demonstrated In the stability of the circuits using tills form of a detector. Not every crystal rectifier which might possess high rectifying properties will be found the best for this purpose, due to the fact that tlie crystal can be made to provide a stabilizing effect on the reflex action of the circuit. The fixed type of crystal naturally requiring no adjustment. If correctly designed, affords the best form of rectifier for tlie reflex circuit. Another point of interest is the fact that not every audio transformer can be used in a reflex circuit. In a reflex circuit the audio transformer Is associated with the radio frequency currents of the circuits and requires a design and construction differing from tlie regular audio transformer. micro-watt- s Care in Connecting Hints for Amateurs Who Build Own Sets Jacks for Amplifiers Where vacuum tubes, and a number of steps of amplification are used it is sometimes advantageous to he able to connect in on the detector tube or on one or more stages of amplification. Telephone jacks are a great convenience to those who know liovv to connect them for this purpose. If connected improperly they are sources of constant trouble. Jacks are generally used to shift from one stage to the next. There are other types which may he wired to control automatically the filament current. This arrangement is a convenient one and results In a great saving of battery power. Wiring tlie jacks in an amplifier circuit is ofttimes a difficult problem and unless the builder has some knowledge of them It is h st to leave them alone. An amplifier jack poorly wired will spoil tlie efficiency of tlie set as a vv hole. It is best to avoid the use of flux or soldering paste when soldering tlie eonneetions to the terminals of the At times builders telephone jacks. make an untidy job of ttiis so Mint when tlie flux is heated it soaks through and finds its way to tlie pa- - r Scientists are excited about power from mercury vapor, making possible a double vapor power plant In which turbines for generating electricity are driven both by mercury vapor and water .vapor from the same fuel source, resulting in a gain of about 50 por cent in power per pound of fuel. Tills Is the outstanding achievement of a new boiler perfected by the General Eleitrie company. The last great step in improving the efficiency of manufacturing power was the replacement of the reciprocating (ngine by the steam turbine. The invention of the mercury vapor boiler is regarded as a greater step In the progress of science. The modern steam turbine is about 40 per cent more efficient than the best reciprocating engines, but, according to William L. Emmet, consulting engineer for the company nnd Inventor of the new process, the mercury boiler will produce with S3 pounds gauge pressure, when compared with a steam turbine generating plant which uses 200 pounds steam pressure, about 52 per more output In electricity per pound of fueL In any circuit where one side of the condenser is connected to the ground it Is best to ground the rotating plates, thus doing away with some of the effects. t For real DX work a antenna with a series variable condenser works very well. Although this Is not ns selective as a shorter one, surprising results will be experienced for long distance reception ns well as local audibility. This is an old amateur stunt. In wiring a receiver set all connecting wires should be short, direct and well spaced from each other. Wire used for winding inductance coil should have as little Insulation Immediately surrounding the wire as possible. This adds to tlie distributing capacity of tlie coil and results in loss of power and audibility. It is worth- - while to use dead end switches for disconnecting the major part of tlie coil when not In use. Why waste power by having the unused portion in tlie circuit? For clearer reception use a C battery in each step of amplification. This will double the life of the B battery, as tlie plate will only draw about half when a C battery is connected In the circuit. luind-enuacit- y 300-foo- Very Easy Matter to Destroy B Battery short circuit on a B battery it in a very short time because the cells are small and the chemicals are rapidly exhausted under heavy currents.
