When friends are lost, something is lost. When health is lost, something is lost; but when charac ter is lost, everything is lost. There is nothing that one admires more than if he can look at a man and When wealth is lost, nothing is see character. What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the wole world and lose his own soul? Why? He is gone. He is dead to the world. There i3 character again. Character is like stock in trade; the more of it a man possesses, the greater his facilities for making addition to it. Character is power, is influence; it makes friends, creates funds, draws patronage and support and opens a sure and easy way to wealth, honor and happiness. What more does one desire. As there is nothing in the world that is great but man, there is truly nothing great in a man but character. Just as Phillips Brooks states, "No man has come to true greatness who has not felt in some degree that his life belongs to his race, and what Cod gives him he gives him for mankind. Saiina in Fifty Years. After supervising a school of music in Paris for nearly twenty years, I decided to tour the United States and Europe. So, in my private airplane, I landed at the airport of my old home town that used to be called Saiina, but which is now the metropolis of Southern Utah. Not only did I find one town, but many surrounding towns. One thriving mining town north of Saiina was called "Burnsville, with about ten thousand inhabitants. The coal mines were doing nicely also. Included in my program was a visit to the school. I was especially desirous of visiting the science class and found there a very "Tho Iktier Business Stove" Distinctly a Ham Institution. Hundreds of local citizens saw it every day, many passing it by, some stopping to drink of it. A stranger came one day, saw and drank, but he did not pass. He is a millionaire today, through the sale of that water in bottles. A lady wrote me a letter in which she asked, What do you mean when you say one of the monkey wrenches in community machine; y is 'contemp-tuou- a famdiinrity ? When local business men say, All we ask is a chance to serve you, it causes you to say, "Why should we do them any favors; what have they ever done for us? It is that which puts the idea in your head that there is nothing for you in Saiina, and to he something or do something you have to go elsewhere; that which causes you to feel that Saiina is not big enough for you when the truth of the matter is that Saiina is just ns big as you make it. To be contemptuously familiar keeps you down, belittles you and belittles Saiina, and causes all wide-wak- e people who know you and with whom you come in contact to foel sorry for you and pity you. "Contemptuous familiarity is worse than a monkey wrench in the machinery it is a disease, playing havoc with communities everywhere. You know the story of the man who moved away because it was such a nuisance to pick up the stones full of little black lumps that littered his field and hindered his plowing each spring. Today that field is the largest diamond mine in the world. Also the man who sold his farm because there was so much oily scum oft the creek that the stock could not drink today one of the cuntrys finest oil fields. Many people have said "If I .were only rich I know I would be happy But this is not true because statistics tell us that about 90 to 100 million aires in the United States this year This have taken their own lives. proves that wealth does not always bring happiness. Melba, the great singer, said that she was famous a long while before she was happy. Harry Lauder, a Scotch comedian, said the only way to find true happiness was helping or doing service for others. He also quoted that the greatest happiness that comes to him is when he is pleasing his audience and making them happy. He says that many the time the people do not applaud him as much in one act as they do in another and it makes him sad to think that he hasnt pleased his audience as he might have done.
