Show PIKES PEAK HIGHWAY A bulletin has just been issued Is from the headquarters of the pikes peak ocean to odean ocean highway at colorado springs concerning the specifications for marking this great highway the bulletin is as follows official marker the official marker is to be an enameled steel sign of 18 gauga gaug metal in in size it is to be mounted and set on a separate post distinct from other markers or signs it is recommended that a post be used and that the lower edge of the sign be fours four feet above the ground that red and white bands correspondingly to therole the pole marking each ten inches in width be placed immediately below the marker the re maider of the pole below the red and white bands being painted e a dark green color two coats of paint to be used for all these colors the markers are to be fastened to the posts with brass screws not nails the official marker is to be placed at each entrance to each town along the highway and also at intervals not greater than five miles along the way whenever possible one or more markers should be set at prominent places within cities and towns tn in selecting the exact spot for the marker post considerable care should be exercised to see that it is given a conspicuous position pole painting the official pole marking consists of red and white hands bands each ten inch inches es in eidth these bands are to be placed on not less than four poles at each turn norcross road and care should be taken that the marking arking in at these places is so conspicuous that it can be seen for some distance batore the turn urn or crossroad cross road is reached and also that it is so plainly done that it leaves no doubt in the mind of the traveler as to the right road between turns it la urged hat every telephone polie along the highway be painted and that in the absence of beltt phone or other poles for any bah sid erable distance fence posts rocks or other objects be chark ed it it 1 is not feasible to pal paint q every pole jt it is S strongly re com mended that at least every antt pole be painted even where wilem there is no possible chance that the traveler trave leri im amy uy lose his way va it import important ant that the poles through the towns bi be accurately and carefully pain painted and at least two poles in every town block should be tainted rain ted the red band comes above the white band and the lower edge of the white band should be not less than five feet above the ground two coats of paint are required option is gi given gien en of the following paints 1 sherwin williams tartar red paint 2 A mixture of 23 2 3 harrisons harrison s unfading vermillion and 13 1 3 venetian red with proper proportions linseed oil and varnish it is not absolutely essential that these paints be used but it is important the color of red be uniform and if these particular brands are not used care should be taken to use a paint of the same shade avoiding an orange or light red in favor of a dark or maroon shade I 1 danger signs danger signs consist of the word danger in red letters on a white back grud the sign to be of the same material as the marker and to be only at places where there is actual danger dangen fry r v state markings it is under stood that the marking of the pikes peak ocean to way is supplemental to ay amy state marking already placed on the road except that each state is required to mark the potes poles in conform lity with the system adopted by the national association |
