uintah basin roosevelt is the midway mid way point from all other points pr or the HUB no matter which way you may look regardless of how you may want to frafel or what land you may wish to inspect or what to town wn you think may interest you most roosevelt is about the natural center of operations population roosevelt has about 1000 citizens it is is a city of tile the third class both as to city government and as to postoffice post office receipts if you will read further you will agree willim thattie population must continue to rapidly increase v elevation roosevelt is feet above sea level west and north the country gradually rises towards and upon bench lands which continue conti hue to the foothills north of the town the uintah mountains rise abruptly about fifteen miles distant and several canyons open up leading to the forests fishing water power sites and range looking west we see the country slowly rising for about fifty miles in an air line south of town the country is but slightly higher until we reach the southern boundary of the south myton bench about thirty miles distant but east of roosevelt the land rapidly slopes towards green river the loading ai art aries feries or natural drainage e systems being the Unita lift ind duc duchesne esne rivers these rivers converce con converge verie near randlett Randlet fc and join the green near ouray the altitude of which is possibly a 1 little lower than salt lake city or about feet coal and timber the basin on the east cast west wid south is well supplied with coal but at roosevelt it is too far underground for commercial we haul ayr our coal about twenty five miles same some veins however are slightly nearer and can be obtained for y a ton at the mine timber plainly seen on the gi giant int Uinta hs is plen ticul in tact fact theft i isai ia almost most in plain view of our town about 66 per ce cent r it of the states total timber lumber retells for 2500 per M but for any important building a much lower price may be jota inal wood is ifal and cheap chiate not more often than once every five t years yearn do we have enough fur a good sleigh ride at roosevelt on the higher i lands eacle win i ter cans considerable Memble snow falls but from roosevelt on cast to green river the usual thing is bare land for the twelve months this condition is caused by twe ove peculiar formation of mountain barriers on the west an ara north which direct the forms toward the ilie north and south leaving the center of the basin with a much lesser amount I 1 of annual precipitation although giving it the principal streams and their tributaries tributa ries wind and frost the basin has no wind from about september 1st ast until may of each year during the fall and winter months scarcely a breeze is ever felt the giant uintah range on the north shuts out every breath of the cold air 14 currents that are po eo well known in wyoming and 1 idaho during the spring and summer months we have about the same amount of wind as you fy find at provo and salt lake the seasons are quite the same sn in length as is the rule for salt lake brigham Brig hara city or provo of course we have J a ve very Y country affording many alti tuda audes s often secluded coves are found that have ion long seasons even though quite high but gen I 1 j brally speaking and for the great central district p our last frost in the spring is about may 1st ast and ahe first fall frost is from october 1st ast to 15 th that is a fair average sheep and cattle cat la 11 range grige the uintah basin hi aai the most desirable sheep and cattle range country of the west fortunately we have on the northern and western borders a vast summer range 1 largely supervised by the F orest forest service and on the ae east and south we have the extensive winter range where snow seldom cornea comes and which is ideal for sheep and cattle in other words the agricultural section of the basin is surrounded by a borderland border land of range and forest some of which is immensely rich in coal oil 0 aad hydrocarbons hydro carbons carbona the most uninviting and desolate parts h having abing a present market baue for the badro hydrocarbons carbons of possible principally gilsonite hence this range country is sol something more than RANGE ANGE land and water land and water varies vanes in in rice price according to location and amount of work and d improvements E even ven within a radius of fifteen een miles of roosevelt land prices vary run liking ng from ten to fifty dollars per acre aare as some farms arns are becoming productive and quite remu operative pera ora tive while others ire are practically untouched asides des the many bargains obtainable from the a white man the government at fort lj has hundreds of bargains in farm lands cash arid terms and many farms to lease for very low rentals one third of the state it may surprise you to know that in this thin inland empire we have one third of all the irn irrigated or irrigable land in the state of utah leaving aside every natural resource except ei the land still we have enough wealth for people even estimating the possibilities by the usual western utilization of farm lands soil the soil is of very great variety near the edge of many of the benches the soil may be shallow being near the rock under strata the benches drop off in somewhat of a staircase fashion from the western and northwestern highlands towards the river basin all sloping in a gene general way to green river there are many sandy areas where the soil is excellent for grazing and for all crops there are some areas where the soil is slightly gravelly and there are large districts di of a rich clay the prospective settler will find any kind of soil and all kinds of climate he may desire natural wonders it would not be fair to roosevelt the natural center of the basin if we did not mention in this ab short ort out outline line the wonderful uintah mountains the switzerland of the united states this giant range runs east and west unbroken with its snow clad granite peaks reaching feet into the clear sky peak after peak rugged and bleak poetry but not fiction extend along the main ridge possibly lakes from the green river canyon to the head of the duchesne river are to be seen on the south side of the range these lakes are at various altitudes some of them being fed by ice fields or perpetual glaciers while others lower down are surrounded by dew dewe e forests or nestle in coves with borderland of grass or perhaps completely surrounded with arl granite nite limestone or sandstone gand stone there are arc many caves several of which have I ave not yet been explored and one at least of which h is one of the great re at western wonders several parties have vowed that they would explore the vast recesses of the big cave but ahe 1 credit esyet et to som daring explorer to at achieve I 1 bieve on the southern slop slopes es of those these mountains are hundreds hundred 3 of power sites wo have the greatest potential water vater power i in the west vest and can operate all the railroads and do all the work in the state in so far as electrical current may be well carried the united states geological survey estimates our hydrocarbons hydro carbons as being worth it is reported that prof day the well known government geologist stated that the basin has the I 1 largest arg estoil oil reservoir in the country this great scientist supervised a seasons experiments in mapping out and testing the oil it was found that the yielded as much oil as the deposits in the british islands that have been worked for sixty years or more no well drilling for oil has been done in the utah part of the dasin basin but high grade oils have been found just over the line in colorado on white river space will not permit further mention of our riches water supply how is the water supply well sir the fact is we have 60 per cent of all the water in utah or to be more exact more than 60 per dent cent of the total water that runs in the hills and valleys and canyons of utah passes through the green river canyon south of ouray the several large rivers that feed in our mountains the duchesne Lake fork strawberry uintah white river and many other streams 0 give us a better and larger supply of water than any ther other part of utah drainage the se several vergal large rivers with the many smaller streams afford excellent drainage systems if after some time over irrigation the condition generally encountered in new districts becomes a problem it will be found that we have the easiest drained country in the west it is a fact that ian lands ds are all of good natural drainage with ample waterways for carrying off the stif surplus plus water roosevelt the commercial cepter roosevelt is the cepter center of all this big country countryman coun tryan at the pra pres ent ti time me has a good chance of beco becoming in ilk the ass ness hub study the map each ci circle 1 areld represents an added ten miles from our thriving city within a radius of twenty five miles are nearly all the towns and most of the present rese n t activities of the inland empire our town is built on a sandy upland midway between the duchesne and the uintah r rivers jers we dont have any mud because the water is so quickly drained away we have much sunshine the town has a good water system and is jin improving proving and enlarging it we have electric gigli ligli lights 6 a good 1 flour mill the county high school costing continued on list lAst page adose roosevelt velt and its resources norn iora page pace one roosevelt is the educational center of the basin and the most desirable residence town our busness business houses are numerous and rapidly increasing for instance we have four blacksmith shops an auto repair shop three hardware stores two implement houses five general stores two drug stores a dairy and cream supply depot in connection with a confectionery store a good furniture store two or three hotels a meat market a newspaper a bank a harness shop two barber shops several real estate offices brick yard picture show skating rink etc etc seed and apples excel come to roosevelt if you expect to come to the uintah basin it will be quite right to make roosevelt the base of operations from our thriving town you can quickly examine the country in all directions if you have no present intentions of coming to our wonderland then let us its say that you should come as a matter of fairness to yourself if you ever expect to better your conditions by moving regardless of what railroad builds into the basin we expect it will either pass through the town or come mighty close to the city limits if the railroad does not come for another year or two our town will be so important that the road builders will find it necessary to make the survey via roosevelt in the ensuing year we shall nearly double the population because visitors are corring fast and most of them are making roosevelt their home A boom Is close at hand A boom is close at hand we are on the eve of big doings it is conservative to say that within ten years the basin will have a town of people that means that within three to five years there will be some town building going on of course we know this we are used to it new towns are being born out here every month that is a dozen new post offices were established in 1915 at first they have only the postoffice post office and a store with a blacksmith shop soon there is a church and amusement hall or general purpose establishment and then slowly but surely there grows up the country town there are about thirty five towns within a radius of twenty five miles of roosevelt and the number is gradually growing 1 routes if you reside in utah or idaho or in any country west vest or southwest the best route is via the D R G irom from salt lake to helper utah and then by auto stage to roosevelt if you reside east of utah the best route is via the D R G to slack mack colo and then over the uintah raVI road auto stage line to roosevelt both routes are comparatively cheap for the auto stage fares and every convenience is afforded which good service demands traveling hotel expenses etc are reasonably cheap throughout the basin and especially at roosevelt |
