When not properly adjusted, heating efficencles of 50 to 60 per cent are not uncommon. This means that up to 40 per cent of your fuel can be wasted. The test is made by analy-zi- ng the temperature and the COZ (Carbondi oxide) content of the flue gases. With gas heat the flue temperature should be 400 to 425 degrees. With oil heat 450 to 600 degrees is proper. If the gases are hotter, It means that too much beat Is going up the chimney. With gas heat the C02 content should be 8 to 8 12 per cent and with oil heat 10 to 12 12 per cent. If it is less, it means that the fuel is not being properly burned. A reputable serviceman can make this simple test. b 3 NOW COHTAC COLD CAPSULES Rog. NYLONS 1 .00 Mrs. D.G. Got your ticket NOW at U. of If. Today they are considered architectural gems. In the 19th century, people thought that the new houses they were getting were Inferior to the old. Today we still have the same reservations. Fm sure that when Mr. 0. T.s grandson is 72, he will be lust as critical of the houses he will be observing being built in the 21st century. I hope it doesnt come as a shgcLto many readers if I express die opinion thathous-- ' es are being built better than they used to. Today houses are more weather-tigh- t, they provide more comfortable living, they settle less, the walls are straighter and the floors are more level. Its true we no longer use massive structural components, but there is no need for 3 inch x 12 inch joists, 24 inch stone walls and 2 inch flooring; any builder renovating old houses can tell many tales of shoddy construction. Today we have many controls, standards and regulations which curb many of the faulty building practices that used to exist. In summary, as a construction expert, it is my opinion that there is less shoddy construction today than was true 100 years Dear Mr. Meltzen At 72, I hope you will forgive me if Fm a bit nostal- about the past.
