A University Hospital, pa- -, tfent requiring emergency major surgery was found to require eight units of a very B RH posrare blood type itive - Lewis A A B Negative blood. Contact with the Salt Lake City Red Cross blood donor service, which has a national network, quickly turned up a supply of eight pints of the rare blood in Los Angeles. It was rushed by Jet to Salt Lake City. The operation was done in time, and the patient survived a successful open heart operation. Without the rapid exchange of information which revealed the sources and supply of the rare blood, the time and effort to find a donor with the same type would probably have taken weeks; much money, and no guarantee of success. According to Dr. DeWitt Hunter, head of the University Hospital Clinical Laboratories, we would have had to screen at least 8,000 people in order to obtain the same amount of blood. Only about one person in a thousand would qualify as a donor for this patient. In order to obtain this rare type, an urgent appeal would have gone out to all news media, the Air Force, Army, Navy, and many other blood banks. The Clinical Laboratories would have had to hire three or four additional technologists on a temporary basis to screen possible donors; each test would cost approxi - Boy 7Vt frotuic tic tome iftfletcC&m 0 m MISS WONDERFUL JOHN C. The only airline in the United States to attempt it to date, Frontier has instituted a plan in which passengers can climb aboard any rontier flight operating between major cities without a reservation by Just showingup at the airport at flight time for half fare. The plan is in response to a Civil Aueronotics Board appeal to the air industry generally to reduce air fares to make them competitive with auto, bus and train travel. At this point Frontier is limited to a 90 day test period. If the plan proves desirable to the public and not damaging to 'Frontiers economic" situation it will presumably be extended. On many flights, according to Salt Lake regional sales manager T. R. Boyle, seats -- hut costs might be half-fillgo co anyway. Even if a flight is empty Frontier's contract with the post office requires them to run. The half fare plan began February 1, Since then 4300 passengers have utilized it throughout Frontiers system. Mr. Bovle reports that 25 percent of these passengers would have flown anyway - the balance would probably have gone by other transportation. As an example of the service offered Frontier notes that they have five flights each day available to Denver cm which the half fare plan applies. Western Airlines also flies to Denver from Salt Lake.
