Television plays are rated and downtown films are criticized but movies seen regularly on TV are largely ignored. I straight-face- d it through several dop recently before one emerged that deserved further attention. Titled 'Mark of Ihe Rene-gade it classified as a Big Z (for Zorror) attempt to unite Mexico and the United States by destroying Califorhand-me-do- wn nia. The leading man is a new world neer do well, cruelly branded on toe forehead with an R because of some unnamed mischief. This Renegade (who has a heart of feathers) is trapped into toe clutches of a malicious character who plans to abscond with California by marrying our hero to a Sweet Spanish Senorlta, daughter of Don..,.sombody or other.... a promlnant politico. The rag Renegade ties around his head to hide toe brand and therefore remain inconspicuous is effective only as long as he wears his hat and throughout the story only one actor is preceptive enough to question toe fashion. Ren naturally makes toe mistake falling in love with his sweet victim and further becomes involved with a girl from the gambling house who plays checkers for a living. (This situation is obviously a forgery, borrowed from reject westerns.) Personality differences between the two ladies are readily apparent from toe depth of their neck- lines. from one elegant scene in which R is discovered in the bath trying to cover his forehead the action moves quickly at a slow clip. Admittedly, it was a little odd to see the star riding but toe toreador slacks he wears really excluded any other method. Aside side-sadd- You know toe answer to that one right away. So, where it says: 'I am handsome or 1 am not handsome, you all know where to put toe mark. And when it comes to pretty or not pretty. what woman in her right mind is going to mark the negative? ' e Since its unconstitutional in the United States not to like mothers, youd jolly well better check that one right. I happen to like girls, boys, men and women perhaps not in that order, and perhaps not all to toe same degree, but toe form does not allow for any answer except yes and no, black and white. If youre interested, too, pick up your pencils and lets start marking. The first step, I would imagine, is to decide whether or not were going to cheat. Shall we mark down toe truth, or should we make ourselves sound lovelier than we really are? reason for viewing the film till the bitter end was toe conviction that any story that bad must have a spectacular finale. Myper-sistan- ce was rewarded. The closing scene opens at toe undeserved shotgun wedding of R and Senorita interrupted by a duel with a disgruntled suitor. ...which is in turn interruped by toe long arm of the law arriving to grab Ren. In a dramatic climax, toe priest (you will recall the gathering was originally a wedding) is revealed to be his ally. Renegade pulls the scar off his forehead, throwing it at the feet of toe villian and divulges his identity as that of a secret agent hired by a monastery. In evaluating toe finished tale, my first impulse was to take an aspirin and sleep it off. Second thoughts led me to examine my hostility and I realized that toe resentment stemmed from toe fact that the hero looked better in tight slacks than I do. No one I care to know, certainly. There is also toe question of price, an ugly word which never appears in toe ad. Is toe Selecting Machine doing this for free? Will it send me my reply in a plain envelope just out of love for mankind, or does toe service cost maybe $5, $50, or $500? Replacing a turtle might be expensive. What if the filee is unhappy with what arrives in toe plain envelope? I would imagine that toe answer goes as follows: 'CONGRATULATIONS!
