The money, paid at a rate of $6,000 a year is to be used at the discretion of the dean of the College of Medicine, 'to supplement salary, aid research or otherwise assist in the development of the Scholar as a teacher or Investigator, John M. Russell, president of the fund reported when the grant was awarded. The Scholar grants have been awarded by the Markle Foundation since 1948 to relieve the faculty shortage in medical schools by giving sup port to young teachers and investigators early in their careers, Russell said.
