Show gsmm mmsmm turn rWaaMMiUidMijf Reader The Many Moods of ff ill Lucas Award Winner Strikes Back by ff 'iU We still think metropolitan government would be a good idea for Salt Lake County. If properly accomplished, it could mean a considerable boost in efficiency and effectiveness -- - to make possible the dream of us all, lower taxes. Opponents often point to the citys higher taxes-- - and ask why county residents should have to share that burden. Yet a story in last week's Review indicates that everything is not necessarily coming up roses out south. The Utah Fire Rating Bureau pegs most of the city at a Class Three in their scale of insurance protection. The county is tagged anywhere from Class Seven to Nine only a step or two from the worst possible rating. The higher the number the higher the fire insurance rates. but a good Part of the problem is simply the distances between points deal of the difficulty lies with the county's lack of interest in providing protection. If this delinquency results in lower taxes for county residents, they more than pay the difference in fire insurance premiums. ch were sure Depreciating Schools Drive Out Prosperity The last school bond election In Evanston, Illinois, was spearheaded by the local realtors. This Isnt really such a goofy idea lLone will look at the tangible advantages at a good school system. is on the move, good schools are a big factor In where they to decide settle. Industry likes to locate where wholesome conditions and educational advantages are available to personnel. By the same token, a depreciating school system drives our prosperous residential neighborhoods and invites declining real estate values. When a family We think your paper is one of tbe best! The printing is Mack and clear and headlines in large type, pictures are clear and in- teresting. The picture of the two dogs that had a sad time with the porcupine reminded me of our Joe -- Boy, a dog we had many years ago, who died of old age, but suffered the same fate as those two only worse Besides Ms face, wMch looked like a Ms paws and legs also held quills. I remember when I was a little girl a ' veterinarian came to the bouse to give me aog with the dog ether and get the quills out on the kitchen table. I hope those two pictured learned to leave porcupines alone after one dose of quills Ours didnt. He came home again after a few weeks in not quite so almost the same condition many quills, but plenty. I should like to say to the Mount View Elementary School playground committee, why not ask the school authorities to have or school on the playground for a half-da- y and let the children longer if necessary clean up the playground? TMs is nothing new. It was done in a school In wMch I taught in Hawaii and also at a school in Davis County, one in Carbon County and other schools where I have taught. The children come dressed for tMs work, bring their own rakes, shovels and other tools. Everything was well organized. The was divided into sections. Children were appointed to various sections under group leaders. The plan worked well and the children were proud to help create their own playground. I was Interested in the repentance of the youth who burglarized the Eastwood Elementary School. Too bad he went in the first time, but be showed there was good in Ms makeup by bringing beck what be had taken. "Baby-Fac- e Burglar Expresses Remorse," was cleverly written. I am a substitute teacher for the Granite District. I read S. A. Andersen's comment about the Will Lucas column (is it a woman who writes It, Mrs. Lucas?) I think the column is cute and clever ana not "drivel, so inept and absurd." Of course, people are glad to have a little fun and humor along the way to balance all the grief, hard knocks and deep thinking. Let us add just one minor point to the current controversy over what and how much information should be available to news media. The city attorney -- - nudged by Mayor J. Bracken Lee seems to have said that reporters should not be privy to more information than is available to the general public. We would Just like to underline that this is a very wide area including practically all government records such as city and county contract agreements, auditor's records, minutes of meetings conducted by governmental bodies and arrest reports. What the reporter does is gather this information thus saving each reader the bother of doing it himself. Whether confidential reports of police investigations, personnel conferences and such should be open to the press is rather a moot question since information of this nature, while often wildly interesting, is usually not usable by the press. Everything youve read recently about county government and state officials was picked out of public records from documents available to all. The real point is to insist that this material remain in the public domain; is accurately and promptly placed on record, and is always available to whoever wishes to check the record. At the same time, the classic retort of politicians everywhere when they're displeased with a news item is "gossip mongering, yellow journalism. Dear Sir: Revenge Is so sweet.
