Many thoughts spin through your mind while you wait to nant. wonder "Why are they here? What will they say? How will they look? With this realization, the predomlnent question becomes, "What happens to these youngsters while they are In the custody of the law? And you wonder, can the community help -- - other than through Its elected officials and organized agencies? In fact, the community can help .but before you can decide You accom-modatlon- School, what happens during neighbors The children follow a definite dally routine. They get up In the morning, care for their rooms and go to school or attend other projects. One aspect of caring for these children and helping to guide them becomes Immediately obvious 'when one visits the center. Lloyd Bennett, superintendent of detention at the center. The center operates on the principle that every youngster is entitled to a second chance. They attempt to help the child realize that It Is not the child himself, but his behavior, that IS distasteful to his community, In turn, must be made to remember that the child did not get there alone. Center personnel believe that the community has twin responsibility to Its obligation to protect Its citizens. That Is to help the boys and deliquent aiding girls people so that the permanent staff averages out to about 26 persons. At the center, they are Juvenile court dispositions of their cases which have been referred to the court by Juvenile police offices or welfare agencies.
