I guess theres actually a lot of them. My greatest was when I won all four specialized big championships in the United States. I think there was the most thrill in being the national jumping champion. In 1948, Mr. Engen was coach Of the U.S. Winter Olympic Team at St. Morritz. The U.S. came In third that year, a particularly good -tanding considering the near l?ck of winter sports interest in the country at that time. Of this years Winter Olympics, Mr. Engen says, ct t ALWAYS IMPROVING On skiing in general, Mr. Engen says that it is always changing with new boots, skis and lifts. The biggest change, he says, is the growth of in- terest that will give us real depth in the Olympics and more people on the slopes. Skiers right now, according to Coach Engen, are missing some of the very best skiing of the season. Usually, skiing drops off as soon as Easter passes, he says, This years early Easter has cut the season short, Jjut the slopes are generally very good and not crowded. They should train together now, a good sized group of them now. By the time the Olympics come, we could have a good team. One difficulty for the U.S. is, We use the AAU rules on amaturism. Our rules should be help more team. To help on the problem of paying for file Olympic team, Mr. Engen suggests, In some way the team should be sponsored by our country. Other countries do it -- - Austria, France, and others. Theydont need to be professionals, but it should be almost a fulltime job. We should start rlg.-.now while the last Olyrrplcs are fresh In our minds to train for the next ones, not wait. mzK a Mitch Melich was born in Bingham Canyon, Utah, February 1, 1912. His father ded when Mitch wos 10 years old, ond Mitch has been ever since. He started selling newspapers, later worked at the Utah Copper Compony mine, earning his tuition for college. After receiving his law degree from the Un.versity of Utah, he married Doris M. Snyder of Salt Lake City He established a low practice in Moab, Utah, where he also become active in business, legislation and civic activities. He and Mrs. Melich now live in Salt Lake City. They hove four children. Mitch MeiTTh has getting depth. We have 150 good junior skiers here, and there are more everywhere. We are moving up fast. In other countries skiing was always popular. Here it is just beginning. Now we will have more competition. I look for America to be the rone to beat. Just wait.
