He said that it takes a certain kind of intellect to laugh at Itself... and that a country that no longer can laugh at itself is in real trouble. I agree. Bennett appears on a television program with Dorothy . . . and anyone who would appear anywhere with Dorothy Kllgallen Kts to have a sense of humor! And, Mark Twain said, If you pick up sf starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. That is the principal difference between a dog and a man. Perhaps ... but then, you dont have to put newspapers all over the floor for a man either! Man gains his first measure of Intelligence on the same day when he admits to his stupidity. But there is a far more important aspect to the thorny problem that arose last week: The protection of the individual citizen from criminal attack. It is easy to go nitpicking when any question of improper police performance comes up. Immediately our fears of corruption and brutality put us on guard, we cry help to the Civil Liberties Union. What is shocking is the manner in which many have come to almost accept the frightful increase in beatings, robbery, assault and other orimes. At this juncture the police in both city and county do not need our barbs and thorns They need our support. 1 There are numerous avenues of protection for the citizen who has been subject to un- proper police performance. There is little that can be done for the citizen who has been assaulted or robbed. Commissioner Brady notes that the Sheriffs Office receives an " unreasonable number of calls on absurd matters that could be easily handled by the callers without police help. f... Once we are certain .that we support our , police 'departments properly, by obeying the laws ourselves, by refraining fronr the nui sc ance calls ..that plague the departments daily, and by proper financial backing - then we can be.ina position to criticize them for minor infractions. -- Until then we must work together with our public officials to restore to this community the sense of security to which we are entitled. 'Lets not let things reach the point where we fear to leave our homes at night. , Repercussions Of Job Cutback Not Obvious The announced' cutback at Sperry has been sugarcoated to some degree by Curtis P. Harding, administrator of the Department of Employment Security. Statistically it is not a serious layoff. As an indication of what could happen, it gives us cause for alarm. Demands for some kinds of trained people are good, for many others non-exista- nt. serious factor which has not been mentioned is that Sperry generally pays more for comparable skills than supported industry can afford in this community. Besides having a disruptive effect on pay A non-defen- se jsqales it forces even those in the layoff who ' can find other work to do so at a lower wage. Many of the blessings of Utahs space are a mirage. Thus far the spirit of such leather lunged demagogues as Mississippis Theodore' Bilbo and South Carolinas long time demagogue Cotton Ed Smith has been conspicuously absent. If anything, the bill is being attacked indirectly. Dont force it down our throat has been the Southern plea.
