At a special meeting in the office of Commissioner Marvin G. Jenson, a representative of Helicopter, Inc., of Salt Lake City was encouraged to make a detailed study and report the value of such a service and its costs to the county. It was anticipated that the costs would be more than cancelled out by a combination of savings and service in several areas of metropolitan life. County Fire Chief Frank P. Jones cited a minimum savings of $90 per month that could be applied to the total lease cost by having the craft on hand to guide bentonite planes over forest and brush i: $ I Co-im- hre areas in the cm ity. The helicopter coula save thousands of dollars in damage If it were available to lift men directly to the scenes of brush and watershed fires, to which the men now must walk for considerable distances, Fire Chief Jones' stated. Sheriffs officers could use the craft to reach search and rescue areas more rapidly and more effectively, it was noted. The copter could be used for traffic direction, and as mettraffic Increases, ropolitan could be used very effectively and economically in traffic pattern and traffic engineering study. Commissioner Jenson visualised use of the craft for flood control study and planning, and for mapping streams. In several areas, it was concluded, the craft could be if fix-u- p, utilised to Increase emergency service efficiency on the one hand and to cut down the expenditure of manhours in others.
