Junior high school boys in the Magna area were the first to partake of the program under Mr. Sorensen, who was then coach of the Cyprus High basketball team. Since that time, Mr Sorensen has assumed athletic directorship of Cyprus High Schools athletic program. The pilot program grew for six years until last year when most Salt Lake County Schools became active in the program. Games were played each Saturday morning with a tournament climaxing play after eight weeks of competition. Salt Lake City schools are joining Granite School District schools this year. Jordan School Districts have shown an interest in involving their students though no final decision has been reached. Recreation officials are hoping to make the program county wide. "Wasatch Junior High will not compete In the program," Sorensen said, "Though a recreation program is planned for the East Millcreek Gymnasium," he added. County will be operating under the initial setup. Interest is high. Kearns area reports over 300 boys reported for registration last week. Only seventh, eighth and ninth graders will play in the Kearns program this year though a fifth and sixth grade program is planned for next year upon completion of more facilities. - Junior high school coaches will operate the fifth and sixth grade programs on junior high floors while Salt Lake County High School coaches will host Saturday morning sessions for seventh, eighth and ninth grade cagers, Sorensen said. "There will be some exceptions," be explained. "We hope to have a complete roster of coaches available soon," he added. "Many factions were brought together to make such an ambitious program possible," Mr. Leo explained. Leo cited the groundwork of physical education supervisors John Garrison of Salt Lake City and Willis Winn, Granite School District. "We need the cooperation of a lot of people to make such a program possible," he said. Olympus and Skyline area junior high cagers opened practice last week for seventh, eighth and ninth graders. Bonneville, Olympus Junior, Evergreen, Churchill and East Millcreek Qrm programs plan Saturday scrimmages. Reed Walker oversees the Holladay area program that also includes fifth and sixth grade activity. Fifth and sixth grade activity will be held a junior high gymnasiums with junior high cagers playing in the massive high school facilities. Junior high programs for fifth and sixth graders begin at 9:00 a m. each Saturday. Directors have been named for these programs. They are: Mike Flitton, Evergreen; Ray Varox, East Millcreek Gym; Tony Mitchell, Churchill; Bruce Driggs, Olympus Junior; Kent Clark, Bonneville; with Olympus Ken Farrell directing that area's Junior high cagers and Jim Woodward heading Skyline's junior program.
