Show Rocku Mountain County Recreation Boom Seen In 1963 No one knows better than Paul Rose that a team Is only as good as Its quarterback. It must have been this log that directed Rose, Salt Lake County Recreation De- -. partment director to select Pete Haun, former University of Utah football great to direct the various and sundry activities that fall Into the realm of a recreation department. But Rose knows his quarterbacks. , He knows Murray High School quarterbacks, especially well. Rose didnt gain his knowcopy ledge from a paper-bac- k on How to Select a Quarterback. Though there seemed to be a lull In the announcement of Rose new headman, It was figured by many 'lrcles that Pete Haun would get the Job. Haun was qualified. But progress In the recreation departments programs developed at an unnatural rate of speed. Haun, sensing a need for more recreation throughout the county surrounded himself with an able staff. He multiplied his work load that more might compete or otherwise participate In a form of Salt Lake County Recreation-sponsore- d activity. Baseball programs for the Countys young boys nearly doubled. Quality of the programs was placed on a pro fessional level. Tournaments were on a high level. Champions were crowned knowing competition was rougher than It had been for many a season. A summer basketball league Is a new task facing Haun. ,We know there are some boys who, for various reasons, dont participate in summer baseball, swimming or track programs, Haun confesses. For this reason, were thinking of forming a basketball league. Plans are still on the drawing board but theres every hope we can have It redy for next summer. And so for Rose, a former football coach, and Haun a former football great, 1965 offers a third-dow- n situation with short yardage. Were going for a long yardage next year, Haun smiles. The 1964 season saw the department take the Cops Lea4 gue year olds) and mold It Into one of the finest in Its history. The Rose-Hau- n combo picked up a fading Automotive League (15-year olds) and fired It Into orbit with a load of enthusiasm" and vigor. AH other programs experienced new enthusiasm. But while the Rose-Hacombo must be credited with a share of the credit, the two attribute the success of the program to the hundreds of boosters who make It possible for such an program available to Salt Lake County people. when (13-1- 16 un Ram Gridders Set For '64 Campaign (Continued from Page 10) In Ram plans. phen-oSpeedy, with championship fire In their eyes stalk the Highland football field while looking for defenders to run through or around. He will do most of his handing off to twin halfbacks Dick and Bob Jackson and shifty Bob Shafer, all veterans of Highlands 63 football campaign. Howard Smith, at 175, came on strong at the close of the 63 season and Is certain to see a majority of the action at fullback.
