Show OIL & MINING JOURNAL AUGUST 24,1970 008 VGD? G!!0jQ7 Continued from Page 4 Dear Mr. Blackburn: We have $60,000 in different banks and Savings & Loan's. We have no property nor home. I am 62 years old and my husband is 65. We tried to save every cent we could for retirement, never invested in stocks or bonds for neither of us have any knowledge. Now we are worried about having it all in cash. Of course we have to pay tax on the interest. And inflation is eating away our buying power. Our plan was: The Social Security income, the interest on our bank deposits, plus we planned to withdraw about $2,000 a year from our cash to supplement our living expenses. What would you suggest for a more worry free retirement? Mrs. E. A. Dear Mrs. E. A.: If you go to four different advisors today they would probably give you four different answers. Here are some of your choices: 1. Maintain a cash position and lose buying power as inflation continues unchecked. 2. Invest in blue chip stocks to hedge against inflation but face possibility of further stock market declines. 3. Buy bars of silver as recently recommended in a Wall Street Journal front page story. 4. Buy government bonds. Obviously you shouldnt do any one of the above. You might should do a little of each. My recommendation would be to maintain at least $50,000.00 in insured savings accounts and invest $1 0, 000 in a mutual fund. If you do this you will be hedging both ways against the future. As the stock market goes up as it has over its entire history (concurrent with fluctuations up and down) your investment will be growing at a faster rate than inflation can erode your buying power. Most mutual funds have withdrawal programs wherein you can get a check delivered to you on a regular monthly basis.. What steps should be taken to prevent oil pollution from getting into north slope streams and into the multimillion dollar recreational complex at Flamin Gorge Reservoir? Every stream here but the Bear flows into Flaming Gorge. The Forest Service is also studying a proposed wood pulp mill on the north slope and its pollution effects on Flaming Gorge. Oil drilling requires removal of many tons of dirt. Where will it go? What about solid wastes around the drilling and pumping sites? Officials are faced with the problem of coming up with such answers soon. If and when more oil discoveries occur, they could happen in a hurry, and forest officials want to be ready for anything. The Uinta oil wells are more than mere potential. What has been discovered thus far already proves the field one of the nation's richest, Dr. William P. Hewitt, U. S. Geological Survey at the University of Utah, said recently. The search is on for other new wells on the Uintas north slope. Hewitt said his office had received many inquiries about the environment, but our primary job is simply locating oil, not in getting it out. FINANCIAL FORECAST Wasatch National Forest officials are already studying some other environmental impacts upon the north slope.
