Editor & Publisher - Chuck Hayward EDITORIAL The mining industry, although vital to the economic welfare of this nation, has traditionally had a bad press. And many times has deserved it. There are for example the wasteful and ugly practices of many mining interests who have fouled streams and made ugly ruins of the areas they mined. The strip mining of the Appalachians is a case in point. There is no doubt that the mining industry has been remiss in the area of reclamation over the years, but so have the farmes, the timbermen and everyone else who had a crack at our natural resources. We believe that this concept has changed, and that people who are using the natural resources realize that wise development is a necessity. Unfortunately, the entire mining industry is saddled with the blame for the actions of a few. It will probably come as a surprise to many to discover that mining interests in the Applachians are well under way with replanting and reconstruction programs which are healing the scars left by strip mining activities there. Its unfortunate that mankind has never yet been able to figure out how to mine without at least some disturbance to the earths surface. Perhaps in the future when mankind has harnessed solar energy we can eliminate the need for mining. But dont bet on it. In the meantime, it might be wise for the mining industry to establish methods of policing its members such as the medical and legal professions have. The industry could censure those who fail to follow wise and sensible practices in mining and reclamation, and in this way step into the mainstream of the fight to preserve the natural beauty of our countryside. Although theyve been cast in the role of villains in the struggle to preserve our natural resources, the fact is that mining people enjoy a handsome piece of countryside as much as anyone else. In fact, many of them have chosen the mining profession because it gives them an opportunity to travel in the beautiful back country of the West. Its long past time for the mining industry to embark on a concerted public relations program in support of conservation and multiple use of our public lands, and let it be known once and for all that the mining industry doesnt condone waste and destruction of our natural resources any more than does any sincere Brine ponds create a geometric pattern as they spread over 11,000 acres NO MINERALS COMPANY THREAT Brine Ponds Safe From Runoff Heavy spring runoffs into Great Salt Lake wont have much of an effect on the 11,000 acres of brine ponds belonging to the Great Salt Lake Minerals and Chemical Corp., said Harold J.
