Show OIL & MINING JOURNAL FEBRUARY 16. 1970 Colorado set new records in mineral production in 1969 DENVER-T- he State of Colorado set new records in mineral production during the year 1969 with values rising to $370.9 million which was $8 million more than the previous high year of 1966. Molybdenum: This valuable mineral was responsible for 28 per cent of the state's total mineral output; Production was valued at over $100 million. In addition to the Climax Mine, AMAX completed the shaft at the Henderson project near the company's Urad Mine, and out side' of Idaho Springs. Underground development has commenced and the company estimates the cost will be oever $200 million before the production phase is reached in the mid 1970s. Petroleum: This was the second most important mineral commodity produced in Colorado. Output declined, 10 however, by per cent as new discoveries failed to offset depletion of. older reservoirs. Drilling has been most active in the Las Animas Arch of Southeastern Colorado and also in the Denver Basin. Uranium: Colorado produced 11 per cent of the nation's total uranium output. A depressed uranium market is expected to shift the focus of the state away from uranium for the next few years, however. Lead-ZinLeadville, Colo., was the scene of a joint vt iture development of Asarco and Newmont Mining Co. which was expected to produce 700 tons of ore per day at the mine and mill c: combination by 1971. The property, owned by McCullough Oil Corp. of California, is under lease to the Homestake Mining Co. Tungsten: The Climax Mine belonging, to AMAX, along with a mine in California, produced most of the domestic supply of tungsten for the Nation. Tungsten is produced as a co or byproduct along with molybdenum at both mines. Other significant mineral activity in the State was at the Camp Bird Mine near Ouray where Federal Resources Corp. is sinking a shaft to provide access to the newly discovered orebody. The Federal government underwrote the cost of two explorations for gold and silver in Park County. Two firms doing the exploring are Col-Or- o Corp. and New Orphan Boy Mines. A new $20 million cement plant is operating under the direction of Dewey Rocky Mountain Cement Co., a divison of Martin Marietta Corp. The plant has a capacity of 2.5 million barrels of cement per year. Worries come in a variety of types.
