Show Board ponders request for oil shale Nobel Prize winner Salt Lakers production of a gelatin-likexplosive now used In widely mining has won him a gold medal from the Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences. Dr. Melvin A. Cook, president of IRECO Chemicals, West Jordan, recently received the Nitro-Nob- el medal at ceremonies in Sweden. The medal, awarded annually, was Instituted In 1967 on the 100th anniversary of the discovery of dynamite by Alfred B. Nobel. Frank Allen, Salt Lake City, counsel vice president and for the firm, and Dr. Carroll Knutson, Las Vegas, consultant, appeared at the boards regular meeting to outline the plan. Mr. Allen, who Is a former land division director, explained the firm proposes to drill a 3, 000-fo- ot -deep test hole on the state chemistry. Cooks "slurry explosives were developed In 1956, and now a half billion request for approval of pounds of the ma- terial are used each year. The output Is growing, according to company officials. Slurry explosives are considered the safest, least expensive and most powerful agents used by Industry today. Cook said a large part of the companys production goes to the open pit mining Industry. Its safety factor, he said, Is due in large part to the fact that separate components of the explosive are pumped into boreholes. The material does not become explosive until It Is In the borehole, he said. Dr. Melvin A.
