the board of education evidence was given regarding the evils which they felt were being developed through campett tive athletics the four chief charges which were brought against competitive athletics idere i were as follows 1 in the first place competitive athletics athleta cs especially football often detracted the boys from duties at home and fathers found it difficult to get their boys to come home and help with the farm work after school was out the reply reply to this charge was that it was believed there were enough boys in school to make up the teams without using the boys which chich were needed at home and that those who were needed at home would be regarded inelli intelligible gible for membership on the teams 2 1 the second charge was that competition in athletics trained boys in immorality two specific instances were given where coaches were nere overheard to instruct the boys to do certain things against the rules of the game if they could get away with it the reply to this was that the blame be given to competitive peti tive athletics but to the coaches that were employed and that if the wrong kind of coaches were capable of teaching immorality then care should be taken in getting the right kind of coaches who should have just as much influence in uplifting tho the boys 3 the third charge wis was that competitive athletics brought about hostility between communities instead of good spirited rivalry the reply to that charge was that if competitive athletics was properly handled 11 1 l id d foster the wholesome rivalry and competition which gives life to a community 4 the fourth charge against competitive was that it encouraged cou raged many boys to come to school who came primarily for ath fetics and little else the crepy repy to thi was that it was against the rules of both the state high school athletic association and our own sevier district distri et ruling that any athlete who represents the school should carry not less than three units of credit at a passing grade the points show what evils could bo be very c ca lifis clr cultivated but the matters are being closely watched and supervised in a way that will better our
