Show A BIT OP OF legislation in reading the reports of the doings by the state legislature on the third day of being assembled wednesday january 12 2 wo we find the he following item senator peters started a little flurry of excitement when he proposed that tho the senate employees employs as be given badges of 0 some sort in order as he put it that we may learn to know who our employees are ile he moved that the matter be given into the hands of tho the secretary with power to act senator mckay put the motion you have heard the motion lie he said raid that the officers and employees bo be tagged ile he added that it would probably take only a day or two tor or tho the senators and the employees to become acquainted senator david jensen of weber said eaid he preferred not to have the employees so labeled senator U T jones democrat of cedar su that in these times of economy badges might be written out in ili re red ink and pinned on the employees backs senator peters withdrew ills his mo tion saying that he had been informed that there were already badges on oil hand and that no expense be e attached to the motion senator elizabeth hayward continued the discussion though the motion had been withdrawn by saying that she saw no harm in ili the badges and that it had always been done in the past senator dern followed suit while the senators would soon get acquainted acquaint od with the employees lie ho said visitors frequently did not know I 1 whether they wore were talking to an employee ee or not and were reticent in asking for information which they could readily obtain it if they knew they were talking to a senate cm senator southwick said that no badges were preserved from one session to another but that they were not expensive on being informed that senator peters motion had been withdrawn he took pleasure in renewing tho the motion that badges be provided for tho the employees senator peters said he had bad introduced his motion in good faith and on information given to him but it if there were no facilities at hand and it if tho the motion involved any c pense pc nse even though small he felt that now and at this particular time the motion bo be voted down nevertheless the announcement was that tho the ayes appear to have it and when senator darn called for a division the count stood eleven to live five and the secretary and the ser geant at arnis arms instructed to obey the he order very interesting indeed and amusing it was too it if there was not another side to it also those badges tags or whatever they are will cost the ahe taxpayers a sum that Is so infinitesimally ly small in ili comparison with tho the huge sums that havo have to be appropriated that it is simply negligible yet moro more than an hours time was taken up to discuss this important question whether or not to jabel label the senate employees then when tile tho session is near the close question will be brought up involving sums of thousands perhaps hundreds OL of thousands of dollars and they will be disposed of in probably as many seconds as it took minutes and hours to dispose of the question of badges tor for the senate employees this is the serious side of the debate sketched in the above lines governor malicy mabey in ill his 1113 message to the legislature advocated economy and he ment economy in ili money as well as in ili time and we and with us no doubt tho the whole population of utah wish that our senate would remember what governor mabey said an and d remember that time is money |
