Extension Agent The Russian Wheat Aphid never was still in the county but like the rest of the state the population was very really went away Last year it low The spring and early summer weather was not favorable for survival nor large increases in numbers Consequently it was possible to find only a few of these aphids in local grain fields Looking in grain fields in the north of Richfield and Venice areas we found Russian Wheat Aphid in every grain field with plants over five inches tall I have also seen fields in the Monroe area that had plants with both symptoms and aphids present The economics of treatment at different levels of infestation depends on cost of treatment and market value of the crop but in some cases a five percent infestation justifies treatment It is fairly easy to see where this aphid has been feeding because when it starts sucking the liquid out of a leaf it also injects a toxin which moves in the conducting tissue of the leaf and destroys the chlorophyll in the cells near that vein As a result the leat has white or sometimes pink stripes The area devoid of chlorophyll of course docs not photosynthesize and reduces crop production Aphid activity also causes curling of leaves this is especially important in the case of the flag leaf If it becomes curled such that the head cannot emerge properly then normal development will be inhibited further reducing yield For barley time especially at this is the most effec tive chemical to use It will control the present infestation and has enough residual activity to prevent a later infestation For wheat there are more choices including DiSyston dimethoate and Lorsban Brand names are used here only for convenience The active ingredient by any other name would work as well Before spraying it is important to be sure you need to As in any kind of sampling it is important your sample is representative of the entire field It is not unusual to have "hot spots" in fields where a spot spray may be all that is needed It is equally likely to have parts of a field that may not have any aphids so good scouting practice is important Now is a good time to treat musk thistle I was in a pasture the other day and noticed that the rosettes are quite large and easy to see but the plant has not yet started to bolt 24-should still be effective After and bolting a mixture of 24-dicamba (Banvcl) is better There is lots of whitetop in bloom now and treatment ought to be done now if you haven't already taken care of that VOLUME 106 RICHFIELD Elaine Blackburn Administrator Richfield Care Center As I associate with people By throughout our communities it is becoming more and more evident that there are many who have multiple misconceptions about extended care (nursing home is the old outdated and misleading term many are familiar with) These misconceptions frequently lead to one's detriment by avoidance of admittance to an extended care facility (ECF) when that may be the most important step in the continuum of care and rehabilitation that one could take Years ago the "nursing home" was the place to go as a last resort and most who went there never came home again Well we've come a very long way and the "extended care facility" is now where one goes to recuperate medically stabilize rehabilitate and go home sub-acut- County Travel Council Meets The board of the Sevier County stay and therefore are discharging (partuii larly the elderly ) sooner and sooner it is imperative to understand that in this modem day the LCT (nursing home) is picking up the slack and is providing that vital nursing care and rehabilitation services that our elderly need so desperately If you're aware of an elderly person who has misconceptions or if you're one who's hxked into that foolish promise made years ago of "I will never put you in a nursing home" please be relieved — Richfield Care Center is not a “nursing home" as they were thought of We are a very progressive highly motivated extended care facility e care and providing very extremely intense rehabilitation services much of the time The elderly who are the vast majority of the nursing facility's clients usually have multiple medical problems and therefore may require longer periods of time with more intensive rehabilitation services to recuperate in order to return to the point they are independently functional again and are ready to return home Many of the elderly have the old "nursing home horrors" imbedded so deeply that they will circumvent the extended care facility after the hospitalization go home and take many many months longer to recuperate or rehabilitate than would have been necessary had they come to the ECF and received the intense physical therapy occupational therapy speech therapy and skilled nursing care that is provided With the health care reform is jCadiw Il’s NUMBER UTAH WEDNESDAY May 25 1994 Misconceptions About Extended Care mid-Jun- D It seems a bit of a shame the way
