and the west coast I have received leuers from the South the Southwest and other areas around the country Folks who write are interested in the issues of the day and apparently are concerned about the issues that are going on right here in the Reaper Realm Last week I received a letter from CapL Larry S Ray a highway patrolman in Mobile Alabama and one from JD Bowman from Chula Vista Calif Both sent me copies of the news releases in their area which told of the tragic death of a young mother of two who was attacked killed partially eaten and her remains cached by a mountain lion She apparently gave a futile attempt to defend herself against the big cat but in a physical contest against the large predators of our world man is woefully inadequate without his weapons Manicured nails and flat teeth arc no match for claws which sink into our hairless flabby flesh to hold us while iron hard muscles drag us up to a gaping mouth full of sharp teeth and inch-lon- g fangs that can pierce our skull or puncture our spinal column w ith case This now adds California to the list of other states which have had deaths in recent years to cougars As our population continues to grow and continues to expand residences into the foothills combined with wildlife and other managers bow ing to pressures from the "conflict industries" we can expect to have other incidents like these It’s a r how to recogme and react to difler-en- t hazards including bad weather rush-hou- r traffic sharing the road with other cars cyclists and pedestrians Drivers who succcssfullv complete the course receive a reduction from their Utah driving record once during a three-yea- r period Individuals 55 scars of age and older mav qualify for insurance discounts after completing the course Registration Aubrey Goodwin was voted 3 A Athlete of the Year and the North Sev ier Lady Wolves took the 2A girls championship to highlight area performances at the state high school track meet here at Brigham Young University Goodwin a senior sprinter won the 100 meters (1276) the 200 meters (2571) and the 400 meters (5664) Her time in the 400 was the fastest in Utah this year and broke her own school record by more than a second Lady Wildcat Heidi Harrison won the 1600 meters (5:2730) was third in the 800 meters (2:2060 and fourth in the 3200 meters (122194) The medley relay team of Heidi Gibb Shaylene Allan Came Quamberg and Harrison took first (42473) TTie 1600 relay team Han of Maria Henry Quarnberg and Goodwin finished third (4 1072) Lady Wolf Wendy Sperry won the 800 meters (22658) and 3200 meters (12:0801) to lead the North Sevier girls to a state championship Shauna Squires won the 400 meters ( 1 :0009 ) and w as a member of the winning 1600 relay team (4:1418) with Beckie Hales Haley Wadsen and Audrey Hales Squires also placed fifth in the 100 meters The Lady Wolves also 400 relay (51:942) with Hales Wadsen Mario Okerlund and Squires and the medley relay (42659) with Hales to the predator management fund and then you need to demand that something be done to bring cougars and coyotes in to sine with their dwindling habitat and food supply tions expand human habitation increase into cougar habitation take away the number of lions the ability of the humans to prey on the lions we get - cougars which eliminate their ordinary prey base cougars which lose their caution of man which is their only serious predator an overpopulation of hungry cougars with weird behavior patterns which in turn may result in the loss of defenseless humans Now there is no need to punch the panic button or as humans tend to do overreact But there is a need to get back to reason and use more logic in our efforts to manage ecosystems We need to realize that as things continue to change
