Show THREE RIEN DIE the news columns one day last week brought to newspaper readers details of the death of three men each well known to the general public although for entirely different reasons from great britain came the news of the death of arthur henderson at the age of 72 his father was a scot cotton spinner I 1 As a young boy he be was put to work first in a photographers office and then later was ap iced to an iron moulder later hw be became a lay preacher of the wesleyan ley methodist church in 1903 he became a member of parliament and was one of the organizers of the labor party of which he was a foremost leader holding I 1 several cabinet positions include j ing a tour as secretary of foreign affairs his contribution to inter l j national relations was in the ini terest of disarmament and world peace I 1 an even older man was major general adolphus greeley who died i 1 at the age of 91 his fame rested upon scientific explorations exploration 3 to iward the north pole for which the he WAS awarded the congressional medal of honor less than a year ago although his famous explorations had slipped 50 years into the past before lie he was thus honored II I 1 in 1882 greeley led 25 men lilt into 0 the reaching within seven degrees of the long sought for pole but as rescue ships failed to i each him only seven men were finally brought back to civilization the hardships haid ships and suffering of these men almost passed belief and because of evil rumors which spread about possible differences and strife while in the far north his reputation for a time was under a cloud younger than either of the foregoing was sidney smith who at 58 was lulled killed when his automobile collided with another in illinois smith was well known knorn in this country because he was the artist who created the comic strip the gumps which won the public fancy and brought to its originator a fair sized fortune the afternoon before he was killed smith had just signed a new contract at a year to continue his drawings for another period of five years probably the greatest interest ever shown in any comic occurred some years ago when smith allowed a young woman character mary gold cold to die the careers of these three men were entirely different fortune with the ease case that it brings came to one who amused the public not i to him who suffered for the advancement van cement of science or the other who labored for the large improvement pro of the human race by the abolition of war we do not mean to belittle the life of sidney smith but it strange that society is so organized that wealth comes for a laugh but does not accompany serious and important labors |
