changing Utah is changing and the Reaper Realm is changing Right here in the center of the universe things are changing Throughout history changes in the west have mostly been slow but sometimes they have been meteoric as is the case today During pioneer times and subsequent settlement things went along mostly the way the folks on the land wanted them to But as our nation matured and the west grew the agrarian and rural west started having "growing pains” As the population grew and it became more difficult to make a living for the expanding families on the farm or ranch latter generations sought their fortunes elsewhere and family farms began to disappear In Utah the average age of today’s farmerrancher continues to go up every year Most family ranches and farms can no longer provide a living even for one family let alone all the grown up kids and their spouses and children Old ways give up to new wavs grudgingly but what used to be will never be again Here in the Reaper Realm there are a lot of fortunate folks who are still able to make a go of it on their farms and ranches but the pressures upon them are staggering As our population continues to expand and our counties become more and more "uibanized” the majority of folks will have a new way of looking at the way things ought to be With an increased standard of living and freed from the work hours so prevalent in the rural way of life they have developed other expectations They have more leisure time and are looking for places to go to recreate Some develop a "cause" to make themselves busy or to feel important Issues emerge between folks with differing philosophies and ways of looking at things For whatever reason land ownership in the west never went the way it did in the east Much of it remained in the ownership of the American people Now that was good or bad depending on your point of v icw The fact of the matter is that about 75 percent of Utah is land and resources which belong to everyone The crux of many an issue in today’s west is that more and more Americans Utahns and yes folks in the Reaper Realm are seeing different values in those lands and are demanding changes in the way they are managed Issues evolve when philosophies desires etc collide There is some interesting fallout from these collisions Any time an issue arises their will shortly follow folks with agendas of their own who will pour more fuel on the fire by inventing or concocting a "boogie man" or a "specter" They then try to stir up the masses to their cause by presenting the specter in reams of rhetoric All too often folks are willing to be led by these opportunists Sometimes it is out of fear or ignorance of the boogie man and other times it is their willingness to follow anyone who is so brave as to apparently be willing to take on this new nemesis single handed As these play their realize few to people stop games dawn-to-dar- k n that the course they plot is a or a divisive course which splits people apart and more often than not makes things worse in the long run The only winners in these situations are the lawyers and the s whose agendas of ambition and living in the spotlight are met The west is moving into a new era very rapidly Those who recognize this and look for the potentials and the opportunities it can have will do well Those who are adaptable and flexible w ill come out all right Those who are confrontational and unbending will usually end up with nothing but a modicum of satisfaction However as my dad used to tell me "satisfaction doesn't go over too well on the dinner no-wi- cause-maker- plate" Recently we often hear the term "a way of life" A way of life at best is a fleeting thing Utahn' way of life has been changing almost constantly since the pioneers en- tered the valley of the great Salt Lake Brigham Young had the wisdom to adapt and be flexible and to woik with the changes This allowed us to live in develop and enjoy our State of Deseret for a good many y ears Sure we should try to hang on to that which is good and which is tried and true But we should all become familiar w ith a prayer used by the AAA and make it a part of our every day dealings with the vagaries of this hie It goes something like this: "God grant me the courage and ability to change the things I can the serenity to recognize and accept those I cannot and the wisdom to know the diflerence" Delta Stops Wildcat Win Streak The Delta Rabbits erupted for eight runs in the lop of the fourth inning Tuesday to snap Richfield's 0-- 6 w inning streak w ith a victory but the Wildcats snapped back Friday w ith a 2 win over North Sanpete The Wildcat's had built a 1 lead over the Rabbits before the eruption and added a run in the bottom of the fourth In the bottom of the seventh Tony Brcinholt hit a solo home run but that's where the rally stopped The Rabbits out hit the Wildcats 10 to five and each team was charged w ith an error On Friday Wildcat pitcher Jim Stubbs allowed two runs on five hits while his teammates scored six runs on five hits The 'Cats scored a pair of runs in the lop of the first inning and added two more in the top of the third The final two runs were
