at a program given by a group of elementary school students who are winners in the annual "Reflections" contest promoted by Richfield schools Theme of the program was "If I Could Give the World A Gift" and was carried out through essays poetry visual arts and photography and music composed by the students The program was under the direction of Elaine Neilsen whose interest in youth education is the result of her many years of teaching in elementary schools President Reva Nelson con- ducted Preceptor Upsilon Officers Named to head Preceptor Upsilon sorority actiities in Richfield during County Commissioners Art Show opens Friday in the courthouse auditorium The exhibit which features the visual art of Sevier County residents will be open to the public from noon to 7 pm daily through Tuesday All artists in the county are invited to participate Entries from adults must be submitted framed wired and ready for hanging from noon to 5 p m Thursday Students will enter their art through their respective schools Highlighting this year's show will be a special display of the works of the late Doug Nielson of Monroe who died in May 1993 Nielson an electronic field engineer by trade never felt his art was good enough to sell One of his favorite sayings was "I'll loan you this one" when asked if he would sell a painting He also traded his art work for things he needed including horse pasture rights Two his favorite artists were Charles Russell and Fred Remington A graduate of the Woodbury Art School in Los Angeles he began painting as a hobby Later in life he expanded into sculptonng making clay models and painting them His career required frequent moves but his love for the Monroe Mountains wildlife and horses brought him back to Monroe He worked for seven years as the Monroe City electrician and served a term on the city council Mamed to the former Peggy Momson the Nielsons had three daughters Gmi Dari and Cen and 12 grandchildren Jerald Tolman Monroe will be featured as the "Artist in Action" at 4 pm Saturday Tolman will discuss and demonstrate his first love the creation of portraits At 5 p m Saturday recognition and cash awards will be presented Tolman who worked under John Howard Sanden in New York City has been painting and drawing portraits for years Many of his portraits land in public and private collections in Utah primarily in the St George area He painted pastel portraits of all the superintendents of Washington School District while teaching at Dixie High School in St George Now a teacher at South Sevier High School Tolman has taught at Cedar City High School Utah State University Richfield Junior High School Woodward Junior High School Vernal Junior High School and Snow College He received the Utah State for Award Legislature Distinguished Service m Education in 1993 and also has credentials in 2 school administration Tolman is married to the former Kathlyne Worthen of Ferron and 1 children they are the parents of of age 23 from to six years ranging The Tolmans enjoy weaving proworkjects drawing painting and seasonal ing together m the small greenhouse business they operate in the spring months at their home in Monroe Both are active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Da- y Saints and currently serve as Bishop and Relief Society President respectively Dunne the demonstration Tolman will have several of his portraits on display along with other examples of his work in vanous media His portfolio of some of his v past portraits will also be on K-1- 1 dis-pla- In addition there will be many works of other
