Show THE RICHFIELD REAPER Wednesday April 13 1994 Teacher Awarded Gift For Project David Sorensen English teacher at Richfield High School has been awarded a check from State Farm Insurance Company the Good Neighbors for Good Schools Program and the Utah This program is initiated through the L'tah Education Association's Children at Risk Program RL Nebeker delivered the gift on behalf of the region's State Farm agents Presentation was made to Principal Teresa Robinson who awarded the check to Mr Sorensen Mr Sorensen has taught ninth grade English at Richfield High School for four sears He plans to use this money to initiate a senior portfolio program at Richfield High School Several L'tah high schools have a similar plan implemented in their schools It is a worthwhile program in which all seniors would be responsible to work on a senior portfolio during their four sears working at RHS This would be part of the graduation program at the high school There are children with disabilities and behavior problems and gifted students w ho need a challenge and some who need J azz Sweepstakes Older citizens living alone are likely targets of fraudulent prize and sweepstakes promotions who prey on older folks' hopes of winning big prizes or large amounts of money according to the Better Business Bureau "The con artist's spiel is tailored to befriend lonely senior citizens convince them they've won a prize tactics and then use false promises to dupe them into sending up front money and fees" said Bill Beadle BBB of Utah president "In the end their free prize could end up being quite costly — if there is a prize to be had at all" Usually notification of a sweepstakes prize comes via a telephone call or in the form of a postcard that leads to a phone call However as many victims have discovered the "Ircc" prize may not be free at all Attached to the winnings may be a "redemption fee" "handling charge" or some other hidden cost which in most cases is greater than the market price of the prize In addition the promised "fabulous" prizes are often misrepresented In the BBB's experience a 35 millimeter camera with Hash may be cardboard and disposable and a home computer turns out to be nothing more than a hand-helcalculator The Bureau reports that some past victims of fraudulent prize and sweepstakes promotions were asked to give money to a courier the promoter sent to the house Or they were urged to send cash through an overnight delivery service thereby avoiding the US mail Potential victims may also be pressured to give out their credit card numbers and bank account numbers which enables the promoter to plunder the unsuspecting consumers' accounts high-pressu- d up-fro- incentives and those who don't have experiopportunities for hands-o- discovered in recent years as old student records have been reorganized in their new home at the Sevier School District Office Records clerk Melody Ackerman said some of the diplomas were unclaimed because students have owed fees or fines or other moneys to the school However if these former students or a family member can provide sufficient identification the diplomas can be claimed nowDiplomas
