Show 2 A THE RICHFIELD REAPER r— Wednesday January 19199 A V The ‘Richfield Reaper L'SPS 766-88- 0 Richfield Utah 84701 Telephone 65 West Center is published each Wednesday for S2000 per year in ) The Richfield Reaper (L'SPS area and S2700 per year out of area by The Richfield Reaper 65 West Center Richfield Utah 84701 Second Class Postage paid at Richfield Utah 84701 POSTMASTER: Send address 766-880- PO Box 730 Richfield Utah 84701 Single Copy: 50c Mark G Fuellenbach Publisher - Hal C Edwards Editor changes to Tlic Richfield Reaper Editorial County Elections Important For Future Of The Region This year's elections should by all righis be one of the most important elections to ever come before the people citizens There is a monetary compensation which is commensurate with the job and in most counties equal to and sometimes above the average salary of private sector workers There aren't really anv special issues However the fact that offices which will be on the ballot this year include those who are elected will be making decisions that will probably have more impact on the lives of regional citizens than any othc s Health insurance and other benefits are also included Commissioners in rural areas generally do not work a full time basis but are generally paid in line w ith other jobs for the time spent Nearly all county offices will be up for election this year as well as those for Being in the public eye also means persons in those positions are up for scrutiny and criticism no matter what their decisions may be But as with any other job they are only reauired to do their best and follow the guidelines and laws which govern them state representative and US representative Some of our school board members' offices will also expire this year A major change in the time frame allowed for candidates to file is in effect this year Candidates have only one week to sign up for the election from March 10 through 17 This applies to all offices both on a county and state level Because the primary election is scheduled for June 28 instead of the usual September as in the past candidates must be filed and conventions held prior to that time in order for them to appear on the ballot Running for public office as with anything else in life has advantages and disadvantages Advantages include being able to serve the communities and make decisions which will be for the betterment'of With more and more government intervention from the federal and state levels telling counties and cities w hat they must and can do it is imperative that those persons elected to represent us be aware of the many decisions which will face them — from land fills to road construction We hope that residents of our region counties will seriously consider the possibilities of serving in public office especially in the commissioner posts where the direction of those entities will be de! cided Wild Animal Impact am a very interested consumpuser of tive and wildlife I have been watching Tom Wharton’s articles in The Salt Lake Tribune on the DWR reorganization or should I say castration and I have some deep questions that I foci need to be answered answered or investigated 2 Ted Stewart stated and I have to quote this from Wharton’s arti-cl- c "The Legislature did not cut the DWR budget It actually increased funding while decreasing general funding" How do you increase something by subtracting somemy basic math skills thing must have really faded! I'm not that good at organizing things so I'll just list them and you can sort them ouL 3 Having seen a list of the positions cut and I suggest you gel one of these if you haven't already I see many positions almost half that may be partially or totally federally funded That means they are not paid for by Utah dollars license or otherwise or at the very least Utah is getting some of its Federal contribution back Why would you cut positions that arc paid for by the Federal Government? That doesn’t reduce DWR's spending Also I believe that if these positions are dismissed in the middle of a project that the state would be required to pay the salaries of the project since they defaulted on its completion Then what — Fire more to make up that deficit? In Wharton's new spaper arti- I cle he quoted Bob Valentine as saying that they have eliminated 28 full Ume positions from the DWR Valentine goes to say that the public will sec more DWR people in the field and no reduction is services Maybe I'm not as good an accountant as Mr Valentine but I did not sec anywhere in the article where he states that there will be additional field positions added to put the displaced workers into To me that is X number of employees minus 28 which in my book has always meant 28 less than X Inspirational Principal Richfield High School Principal Teresa Robinson spoke to the American Legion Auxiliary Wednesday Jan 12 on the issues administrators and teachers face in working with today's teenagers in the school system many problems teenagers face today and the difficulty educators face in reaching out to them to offer direction inspiration knowledge and guidance Also on the program South Sevier High School students Janice Hansen and Marion Hess sang Her inspiring talk began with a story of a young boy observed on the beach throwing starfish back "Which Way America?" accompanied by Elizabeth Staples When told that he couldn't make any difference in the overw helming numbers that perish in the sand he replied "Oh yes I do make a differto the ones I throw back" ence Principal Robinson has broken through the proverbial "glass ceiling" by entering the ranks of administration but her most rewarding experience and her goal is to affect the lives of her students for the better and to help them discover the real meaning of their lives into the water when they washed up on the beach in an effort to save their lives In like manner educators teachers and society in general must never become scouragcd and stop trying to make a difference for good in the lives of others in spite of all odds numbers or cost Some w ill benefit and some will be saved and that makes the effort worthwhile t Principal Robinson spoke of the She is a gifted speaker and assured us that we can each one of us make a difference for good in the lives of others Remember the starfish Audrey B Likins American Legion Auxiliary Elsinore Post 75 I suppose what is meant is that something is being said or expressed We all know that sportcastcrs and many sports writers use every term in the book (and some that aren’t) to describe a sporting event I don't know when I last heard a sportscastcr say that a player in a basketball game made a basket He made a bucket he swished the strings he popped one chipped one in layup or cripple And that’s just scratching the surface For example gangs dress a certain way because they arc "making a statement" to the rest of us that The people who play the game arc not players they're cagcrs and they throw the ball at the hoop they arc what they arc In football they don't make touchdowns They score make a TD cross the stripe cut the plane hit paydirt complete a blitz or red I might be saying or what he or she might yet say What i Your Opinion? This newspaper welcome opinion from it readers concerning any subject pertinent to southern Utah While there is no restriction in length we request good judgment and letters which are to the point Anything of a libe lous nature or defamation of characto will not be considered for publication Ietters must be signed with the writer's name address and telephone number which must be published along with the letter IbiaeUines for letters to the editor is Friday at 12 noon I already know they are talking about now So why belabor it with a phrase they heard and think gives them an air of superiority? hear some of just turn off anything else that that person I know that when the worn out cliches Letters To The Editor I It isn’t always what we say but how we go about saying it that tunes us in or out 4 All of the Section Chiefs have been released for the reduction and only a small number will be hired back If they choose to reapply for their jobs then they arc not granted any special preference for former service to the state but must go thru the application process and a "new hire" and compete with "outside applications" Could this be a way to eliminate people who the Levitt's have dealt with in the past or that the "Cowboy Caucus doesn't like (whirling disease big gamclivcstock)? 5 Almost all research facilities have been shut down You had best get a copy of the Wildlife Management Institute Report for this one and see what it says as compared to w hat was done These research stations arc instrumental in working on rangeland rehabilitation (big For example here is one of the current expressions used by a lot of people "Make a statement" I Or kids grow their hair long or wear funny clothes in school (against the policy) because they are "making a statement" about their individuality dog Good old Hot Rod Hundley who broadcasts the Jazz games constantly tells us that John Stockton Actually to me is means they are just plain obstinant and refuse to takes the ball "straight-away- " Now if the game is on TV I can sec what Stockton is doing But if it’s on the radio I'm not sure what "straightaway" is conform to society One which is a real irritation to me is "at this point in time" That worn out phrase from the Watergate hearings 20 years ago is still used by some who want to make their conversation a little more boring or to throw in a bunch of words w Inch mean nothing Is Stockton is dribbling straight down the middle of the floor? Is he going straight across the floor? Is he just running down (or up) the floor? I don't know All I know is that he has the ball and is going "straightaway" What really docs "at this point in time mean"? If we are talking about right now it is redundant to say at this point in time We and gamclivcstock interactions) fish (culturcccologydiscasc) They also are responsible for much of the DWR's cooperative ventures with private individuals and organizations Who will help private individuals and foster cooperation between wildlife and private ventures? Our sports editor Bill McClure "Straight" has become another favorite on TV I first noticed it when the promo announcements would come that "Inside Edition" was coming up next But do they say coming up next? No Now it’s "straight ahead" "Inside Edition is "straight Or "Sports is straight ahead" No more are we told to stay tuned for something it's straight ahead Then there are those who want us to think that the use of certain terms can change time There is currently a TV commercial talking about paying for a pickup in 24 "short months" True February is shorter than all the rest of the months but 24 months is 24 months They may seem long to some They may seem short to others But if you have 24 payments it's still 24 months Or' how about people who work "long hours" An hour has 60 minutes True some hours may seem longer than others But an hour is an hour What docs all this mean? Really nothing But it shows how we can take a description of something and make it seem like something else — at least in how we say iL Maybe that's how we "make a statement" 6 The state has announced that dollar suris has a multi-millio- n plus right now Just the interest collected on that surplus for a couple of weeks would be enough to bail out wildlife If the governor cared about wildlife at all! Why couldn’t some of this surplus be use for temporary funding of DWR and let the work force reduce through attrition? Why couldn't this surplus be used for early retirement incentives? motherhood and all the responsibilities that go along with adulthood I will bet it will not be used to retrain employees for new jobs! Unfortunately the fact that there are bills to pay meals to fix chores to do and a job to perform doesn't make a person immune to one of the many ills that ail the The governor has set aside S500000 for the (blank) Company to enter Utah A company that will have an impact on our natural resources A company that probably should be financially responsible for mitigating its impact on Utah land water and wild resources A company that wants to move to Utah because of our attractive environmental and social climate Why docs he choose to ignore w (Continued On Page ildhfc? 3-- many orders of French fries or a binge of a bit too much chocolate (if there is such as thing as too much chocolate) but every now and then even the clearest of skins arc adoplagued by one — the age-ol- d lescent abscess — a blemish a pimple a zit Call it what you want it's all the same I am well past puberty into adulthood and rapidly approaching middle age I have given up most of my childlike ways and have moved into the world of mortgages and A rose is a rose and boy! did I have a rosy one right smack in the middle of my forehead ZIT ZIT ZIT it seemed to flash in big bold letters adolescent One would think sage from pubescence would provide some the ill that ails many that the pas- into maturity It's one thing to have a pimple when you're a teenager It's kind of expected pari of the turf But not doesn't when you're over 30! Not even us in are fact of Many subject w hen you're over 25 And this one to an occasional occurrence of this was a hummer I was unpleasant aggravation It could be about iL I tried to make it as instress an ovenndulgcnce in one too conspicuous as possible dabbing it immunity to a teen but it y r it doesn’t do any of that crazy stuff He reports it just like it is straightaway with makeup dusting it with powder I could see it out of the comer of my eye and it didn't look pretty from my point of view Luckily I work with some pretty polite people None of them were rude enough say "Gee that sure is a honker you have there!" Or "Boy Patterson growing a third eye?" No one called me a unicorn and they all made a concerted effort not to stare I thought I had camouflaged it quite well the other night when Kraig and Devin and I went to visit some friends w horn I hadn't seen for some time We were silting around visiting showing off the brilliance of our boy He pointed at daddy’s nose and said "Nose" He pointed at the friend’s ear and said "Ear" Then he pointed at my forehead and said "Eye” Thanks Devin |
