stood her first test as a convention city and stood it so well that she at her first trial immediately established a reau that will be instrumental in bringing here other conventions and in due time spread the gospel of our agricultural and mineral resources and our western hospitality thus attracting not only tourists mt also home seekers capital and industries dus tries we are confident that the experiment which we made by being hosts to the convention of the utah state press association will turn out to the benefit of our city and county among those present the first of the newspapermen who came to richfield for the convention was karl S carlton of milford editor and publisher of the beaver county news and vice dent of the utah state press association he arrived here already wednesday evening coming by automobile with his friend 11 E hickman of the telluride power co who happened to be in mildord wednesday and took mr carlton along to richfield commencing friday noon a steady stream of visitors was flowing into the city all of them coming by automobile from as far north as brigham city and as tar far south as panguitch band and by eight in the evening of friday when the guests were invited to sit down at the banquet table prepared for them at the johnston hotel by the commercial club sixty ladies and gentl gentlemen emen of the pencil pushing profession had low ilow I ho v judge hayes hayea understands to make proceedings ce lively and to fire volleys of his fine wit everybody knows and next to the excellent cuisine of the hotel and the splendid arrangement of the affair under the person personal al direction of F X carron the toastmaster is responsible for the tine fine spirit that prevailed at this occasion with him have to be mentioned the entertainment features under the able direction of john hood consisting of mixed quartet duet ailet and solo numbers mrs anna callaway mrs geo F holmstead misses nola coons and elva hansen and Al essers john hood kenneth hood and dan baker demonstrated to the guests that we have talent in our city that is high above the average and right the the first quartet to the tune of the pirates chorus bad to be repeated A hearty welcome was extended to the convention visitors by the toastmaster mayor R G dark clark for the city president R G young for the sevier stake slake county clerk geo M jones jonesb tor for the county M C nelson for the commercial club D P jensen tor for the farm bureau T D martin for the american legion A J ashman for the board of education and R T porte secretary of the association responded in the name of f the editors 0 hie faist business meeting saturday morning the estors editors vi attacked the business before them and made good headway committee reports were acted upon a legislative a solutions resolutions re and a finance committee appointed president nelson of the commercial club appeared before the meeting to explain the arrangement for the excursion vo 0 fishlake fishlike Fish lake charles E arney jr dwelt upon aims and purposes of the intermountain development campaign and during a recess au an of the public all editors of the state was perfected ernest bamberger republican candidate for U S senator and E B I hugh miller filler secretary of the republican state committee attended the meeting of the editors and made short addresses ladies Lali cs outing to lonido hot springs while the editors held their business meeting the visiting la ladies dies were taken by the ladies committee to the monroe hot springs tor a plunge and lunch the excursion was unanimously voted a huge success manager ernest robins of the resort had prepared everything to the best and went to the limit in accommodating the fair visitors so they lett with the best of impressions and lull of praise for the hot springs and manager robins the plunge was greatly enjoyed the lunch magnificently prepared by the ladies ladies of the committee was as delicious as if coming from delmonico and so well pleased was everybody that the gayety gaiety found spirited expression in the dancing of a genuine virginia reel in which every lady present participated tile the ladles ladies committee requests us to express their special thanks and appreciation to mr W M nelson who had taken care of the transportation por tation in a most commendable way we gladly comply with tile the request adding to it the thanks of the whole gang for the admirable manner in which he took care of transporting the guests to Fish fishlike fishlake lake editors shako hands with farmers during the noon hour the representatives senta tives of press were taken to the third ward meeting house to meet and shake hands with members of the richfield local of the sevier county farm bureau the meeting had been prepared and arranged by a committee consisting of president dr J I 1 curtis abe hansen hallsen and dan peterson and turned out a splendid success in the absence of president curtis secretary G W coons acted as master masler ot of ceremonies and directed the informal procedures very pleasingly Alu musical numbers by miss nola coons soprano guy baker and walla wallace ce potter trombone marlell christensen and dell buchanan saxophone with mrs J B D heppler and miss stella bates at the piano furnished good entertainment and the peak of joy was reached when farmer john hood took the floor and gave two scotch songs one of then them i composed by himself to the famous harry lauder sc bong ing roaming in the gloaming gleaming with aft the boys are gone we will miss misi them every one oh its nice to mingle with the press boys the ladles ladies of the third ward served a lap lunch of highest quality and made up entirely of home products they are arc to be heartily congratulated on their culinary accomplishments yet it was not frolics alone there was also a very serious side to the meeting when J E Heppler and chariton explained to the editors the problems confront ing the farmers and asked for the th cooperation of the press in solving these problems while mr heppler treated agricultural topics in general lines mr confined his to dairying that phase of agriculture in which he rendered so splendid services to our county and community in after conclusion of the program an impromptu watermelon bust was enjoyed on the meeting house lawn tile tho afternoon meeting the business meeting of the afternoon teri loon was made etre extremely et remely niely interesting by a well thought out and 1 worked out talk by president epperson I 1 on retrenchment and a splendid talk on publicity of public affairs by secretary porte both speeches followed by a lively and interesting te er discussion in which many abers lombers lom l bers of the association took part in the meantime the committee on resolutions held a meeting in the Reaper office and returning to the assembly in the johnston hotel submitted a report from which we qu quote ote the two paragraphs treating s subjects which are of interest to a larger circle than just the press association the first and the last of the resolutions read I 1 resolved that the utah press association in convention assembled take like this opportunity to express their sincere thanks thansis ana appreciation for the and royal reception accorded them by the good people of richfield and sevier county on the occasion of their semian semi an nual convention held in richfield september 2 3 and 4 1922 and be it further resolved that we are especially ally appreciative of the efforts put forth by the richfield commercial club the city of richfield sevier county commissioners sevier stake presidency richfield farm bureau sevier board of education salina commercial club fishlake fishlike Fish lake resort co and mr and mrs the good people who furnished such splendid musical programs the ladies of richfield who entertained our wives and sweethearts and lastly the public press of the city all of 0 whom contributed in such a hearty manner to make this conven convention tio n one long to be remembered by every member of the utah state press association whereas the prosperity of the state of utah Is based primarily on the success of agriculture and whereas the past two years agriculture ri in utah has been at a low ebb abb due to tile the great slump in the prices of farm products now therefore 1 be it resolved by the utah state press association that we favor the passage of such laws that will give relief to the agricultural interests of utah and the west gali gala concert at the opera house saturday evening a gala concert was given in honor of the convention guests again it was udder direction of john hood and again it must be stated the arrangement gave proof anona to which terrys band furnished tile the music and which was complimentary to the association members followed the concert to via hatchery sunday morning all garages of I 1 the ck cit were kept busy putting au tonic iles into hane for a drive to the s sate ate fish hatchery in glenwood and from there over the glenwood dugway to fishlike fishlake Fish Fisli lake about fifty cars made the trip the big paige of state fish and game commissioners D H madsen with mr madsen and andI tile the editors family taking the lead lea and guiding the caravan to tile the hatchery where mr madsen and caretaker bill explained everything that was aas to be seen after the inspection of the hatchery the caravan proceeded to the lake and it was the consensus of opinion among the guests that the trip over the two mountain roads with the wonderful view all over the valley alone was worth the visit the fishlike fishlake Fish Fisli lake resort was the gathering point of the newspaper folks and the members of the commercial nier cial club who accompanied them W LI nelson the chairman of the transportation committee had made his arrangements so carefully and thoroughly that nobody was left behind and when chas took the count of those who were enjoying the sumptuous dinner he found that never in the history of the resort so many people were gathered around the heavily laden tables at one time not less than people partook in the exquisite spread which was of high credit to mrs and her able assistant miss josephine A course dinner was served that round high and well deserved praise terrys
