Show Sun Fashions, Jumper Dresses Reflect the Pinafore Influence By CHERIE NICHOLAS (W JeMa Looking HOLLYWOOD FTER 11 years and 50 pictures under her mahogany - tanned midriff, Ann Sheridan can afford to sit down and reflect on her life in Hollywood. Seemingly indestructible, Ann has plenty to reflect on. Hollywood holds no secrets for the Annie. Shes been around. She cooks. A pinafore used to be just a pinafore, described in the dictionary as a sleeveless apron protecting the front of a childs dress. But now the question is, when is a pinafore a pinafore for not only are young girls taking to wearing the most charming pinafores eye eer beheld as sun frocks, but this summer the pinafore influence is going that strong you see it reflected in many d' the most bewitching wash dresses that ever graced a summer fashion picture. sun fashThe two ions pictured in the foreground of the illustration, have gone decidedly pinafore in their styling but they really are dresses. Its just such simple frocks as these made of the most fascinating cottons and other delectable washables that ever one might hope to see, that are taking the fashion world by storm this summer. If there is one material beloved more than another this season for the making of pretty little garden cer-tain- ly er lovely-to-beho- ld Black Magic frocks and playtime dresses and party gowns, that material is glazed chintz, in colors so delicious, fruit and flower patterns so temptingly realistic and lovely, that they really must be seen to be appreciated, for mere words cannot describe them. And the good news about them is that this season they are processed with an everglaze finish that stays crisp and lustrous through repeated launderings. Rosy red apples pattern the chintz that makes' the charming sun fashion to the left, and, for the other model, n rose that lends its the indescribable loveliness to a most charming sun frock. The fashion these days is for mothers and their small daughters to wear jumper frocks or pinafore frocks alike in everything but size. You will be entranced with the cuncompanion ning mother-daughtfrocks and also aprons that are making such a fascinating showing in the seasons style parade. The mother and daughter twosome shown above in the picture is typitrend. cal of the Here again we see the pinafore influence reflected in the styling of these attractive jumpers. Yes, its a white accessories el m Unknown to Ann, her sister, Kitty, submitted her picture to the contests Texas district office. John Rosenfield, drama editor of Dallas News, served as the district judge. It was he who telephoned Ann at nearby Dentop, Texas, and told her to catch the next train for Hollywood. Thats how the whole thing happened. It should be noted that of the 30 youngsters who made the trip, Annie was the only one who stuck, cinematically speaking. Annies birthplace, Denton, Texas, is a hamlet 40 miles from Dallas. To save questions, Ann has often said her birthplace was Dallas, but Denton it was, and shes proud of it. She manages to get back there at least once a year for family huddles with her mother, Mrs. G. W. Sheridan, her three sisters, Kitty, Mabel and Pauline, and brother George. Her dad died a few years ago. Probably the big difference between Annie and her Hollywood sisters under the makeup lies in the fact that when the studio that brought her to Hollywood unceremoniously tossed her out, Ann didnt go home crying for mother. Annie stuck it out, taking whatever parts a number of companies tossed her way until, in 1937, she struck pay dirt a good role in The Great OMalley, with Pat OBrien, Humphrey Bogart, and a fine supporting cast at Warners. Barring one instance in 1941, when a salary dispute led to a brief suspension, Annie and Warners have been lovey-dove-y ever since. PMHAUS 'SSSSSi Never Misses Seasoned and mature today, Ann Sheridan has proved to her bosses that she can play a great variety of roles. As Randy, in Kings Row and as the Norwegian patriot in Edge of Darkness Annie laid solid claim to a reputation far removed from her original oomphie (and how she hates the word oomph) roles. At this writing, shes a brittle, amusing, sophisticate in Dough-girl- s. In Torrid Zone she was hot and sultry, but not plain. She fairly sleeked her way through The Man Who Came To Dinner. Name it and Ann does it. The two attempts Ann has made at a happy marriage both foundered. She became Mrs. George Brent on January 5, 1942, and was divorced from him a year later. Previously she and Eddie Norris, now overseas, had a whirl at marriage which also cracked at the seams. Those close to Annie swear that shes about to take off with Steve Hannagan, the public relations expert. As I write this, shes joining him in Florida. Maybe by now shes Mrs. Steve. Square Shooter But if Annie and marriages dont seem to get along, she at least is tremendously popular with all the men at Warners. From cameramen to press agents, theyre solidly behind her. They like her. Shes down to earth; completely natural, and can joke along with the best of them and does. I think Annie gets along better with men than with women. Her own sex often gets Annie peeved. She knows their little tricks and duplicities and doesnt like them. She comes clean and expects others to do the same. When they dont, she lets tham know it. Dont try any devious tricks on Ann Sheridan. Shell tike y aur hea d off. Foster D.
