A S WAS predicted by 99 per cent of all football writers, the past season was one of spectacular form reverses, unprecedented thrills and general uncertainty. The only sure thing was nation-wid- e inconsistency. There were enough upsets so that none looms as the most remarkable. But Auburns defeat of Georgia and Holy Cross defeat of Boston College are freshest in most minds due to their comparatively late dates. Georgia Tech beat Auburn, 15 to 0; Florida beat Auburn 6 to 0; Georgetown tied Auburn 6 to 6 ; Mississippi State beat Auburn 6 to 0; Georgia beat Auburn 41 to 14. Then Auburn beat Georgia 27 to 13. The defeat of Holy Cross was even more unbelievable. Dartmouth beat Holy Cross 17 to 6; Duquesne beat Holy Cross, 25 to 0; Syracuse beat Holy Cross, 19 to 0; Brown beat Holy Cross, 20 to 14. Then, apparently aroused by an overdose of defeat, Holy Cross rose in righteous anger to whip a g Boston College squad, running up 55 points. Look at the record. Holy Cross and Auburn together had been defeated eight times and tied twice. But they totaled 82 points against two of the strongest teams in the nation. 44-1- War Cuts Deeply Into Yule Jewel Business Pre-Flig- Believe me, every man has his secret sorrows, which the world knows not; and oftentimes we call a man cold when he is only sad. Ohio State, Western conference champion and winner in nine of ten games, is the best college football team of 1942 in the opinion of 156 sports ex- perts polled by the Associated Press. Wisconsin, which rated third in the national standings, was the only team to conquer the Buckeyes. The big shift in form from early October to late November is evidenced by the fact that Coach Paul Browns Ohio State athletes were ranked No. 1 in the first three tabulations of the season. They skidded to tenth place in the middle of the campaign, but were third following their defeat of a strong Michigan squad. It was on the strength of their 41 to 12 victory over Iowa that the Buckeyes returned to top place. Looking In on WAACs During Daily Routine Pre-Flig- one of the flower tones. As consistent as any team, Georgia wound up in second place, 93 points behind the Big Ten champs in the final compilations. Six of the first 10 teams picked by the experts are scheduled for bowl games. Second-plac- e Georgia will compete in the Tournament of Roses against the Pacific coast king. Fourth-plac- e Tulsa and seventh-plac- e Tennessee will battle at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Georgia Tech, in fifth place, meets Texas, No. 11 in the standings, in the Cotton Bowl. Boston College, in eighth place," furnishes the opposition for tenth place Alabama in Miamis Orange Bowl. The remaining four of the first 10 teams, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame and Michigan, all have regulations prohibiting appearances in n games. The three Big Ten teams are forbidden by a conference ruling; Notre Dame has its own legislation against such games. Bowl games have become a successful proposition for Alabama. In the past 16 years the Crimson Tide has played in seven bowl games. Alabama has played in the Rose Bowl five times. Only Stanford and Southern California of the Pacific Coast conference have been there more often. Besides the West coast spectacle the Tide has played in the Cotton and Orange Bowls. MRS.
