Its a Privilege Plant Lice Have Odd Life Cycle UTAH Little Insects Often Do Serious Injury to Different Crops. by do serious injury to the plants they infest, have a curious life history, which Dr. P. W. Mason of the bureau of entomology describes in the 1928 Yearbook of the United States Department of Agriculture, Issued recently. "If we examine a branch of a tree or other plant which Is infested, says Doctor Mason, we will see the aphids, in most species grouped together in colonies, usually either on the under side of a leaf or along a twig. They may be greenish, brownish, black, or of other color, depending on the species, or even covered with a mealy powder or long waxlike filaments. Unusual Life History. , "These insects have a very unusual life history; one differing from those of almost all other insects. The egg is laid in the fall of the year, usually on the bark .of the twig. With the coming of warm weather in the spring this egg hatches into what is known as the stem mother. There are no males until the next fall The stem mother gives birth to living young, without the necessity of fertilization. These young are all fe males, and, when mature, give birth to other living young. This continues throughout the summer, there being numerous generations. In each generation there are usually some which are winged and others which are wingless, each form being fully mature. As the spring advances the number of winged forms increases, until, in the case of many species, they fly away to an entirely different kind of plant. Plants so chosen are known as summer hosts ; on them new colonies are started, and there may be several generations on them before the return migration to the winter host On the latter the true sexes which have been produced mate and the eggs are laid. Forms of Aphids. Thus we see that there are several forms of aphids, such as the stem mother, the wingless viviparous female, the winged viviparous female, the male, and the female. These may vary considerably from each other in appearance and have often been described as distinct species. . egg-layin- g Conservation of Labor in Filling Silo Profitable As time draws near, many farmers in ail parts of the country are preparing to follow a plan which differs greatly from silo filling in the days of the rig and the large crew. It is the small crew plan now growing in pop' , ularity. small The crew plan is essentially labor saving. Only two men are necessary to fill. When the binder is equipped with' a bundle elevator, two loads may , be cut and put on the racks without the hard labor of pitching the bundles by hand. The loads are then drawn to the silo and run through the cutter as it takes only a minute to start the tractor which furnishes the belt power, or to turn the switch which starts an electric motor. Experiments at some of our state colleges and practical experience have proved' that tramping is not nec-- . essary for keeping the siiage and in many cases this job has been eliminated. Neither is it necessary to have a man at the feed table of the modern ensilage cutter. silo-fillin- Fifteen years after his graduation. An egg grading SPRINGVILLE be located in will probably plant Springville in the near future, according to announcement by officers of the local poultry association. The assurance of a plant was made at a meeting of local poultrymen held in the high school, where it was announced that a plant would be placed here as soon as there were enough eggs produced to make the establishment pay. Springville expects to produce 85,000 laying hens this. fail. If this number is reached, there will be enough eggs to justify the operation of a plant. LOGAN E. H. Elliott of the Utah Poultry producers association reported recently that the poultry producers are getting their flocks in splendid condition for the winter months. During the past week, 450 cases of eggs have been received ai an average price of $10 a case. Eastern extras, which are the best grade of eggs netted the poultrymen 44 cents a dozen. A 50 per cent increase of eggs was reported for the first week of September of this year, over that of September 1 to 8, 1928. OGDEN From North Ogden recently the first shipment of Weber county peaches rolled out to eastern markets, according to LeLoy Marsh, district agricultural inspector. From now on, Mr. Marsh says, the peaches should ripen rapidly and move out in a similar manner. Mr. Marsh adds that conditions controlling the peach industry in this section of the state have never been better than they are at this time and that the crop should be wonderful. Rains' of the last few days, he adds, have increased the size of the fruit until fully 75 per cent of the peaches minimum with will run from 2 to 2 maximum. most of them going to 2 WASHINGTON The 1929 corn crop was forecast by the department of agriculture on the basis of September 1 condition of 2,455,997,000 bushels, compared with. 2, 740, 514, 000 bush0 els indicated last month, and bushels harvested last year. Control of cattle grubs or heel flies is one of the most important insect problems with which owners of cattle of all classes have to deal, say the authors of a bulletin issued by the United States Department of Agriculture. The cattle grubs or, as they warbles or are otherwise known, cause losses estimated at "wolves, from $50,000,000 to $100,000,000 an, nually. The bulletin truces the life history and habits of the Insect and explains methods of control. The adult form of the insect, the heel fly is rarely seen, although its presence terrifies cattle and causes them to make frantic efforts to escape. Why this is so Is not clear, for the Insect has no mouth for biting, and it lays its eggs on the hair of the animal without causing pain. Two varieties are known the common cattle grub and the northern cattle grub. The common grub is found over most of the United States. The northern grub Is the more persistent and annoying In its attacks on cattle and.U found only rarely in the southern states where Infestations commonly die out without treatment. It is most prevalent In the northeastern states. The cover page of Farmers Bulletin 1596-is something of a departure from the usual federal publications. The injury to the cattle comes through their frantic running caused by the flies and through the parasitic action of the grubs, which result in less healthy and thrifty condition of the cattle and in lessened milk or beef Serious injury to the production. value of the hides is also caused from the holes cut by the grubs. The bulletin gives information as to methods of control, extraction of the grubs by hand or with forceps or killing them by applying insecticides. It has been found that fairly satisfactory local control is possible. The flies apparently do not migrate great distances. The authors, however, believe that, because of the serious damage the insects do, it may eventually become necessary to carry on a system of general eradication, either nationwide or over large areas. Until such a campaign develops they advise each owner to control the Insects affecting his own animals. Farmers Bulletin 1596-F- , Cattle Grubs or Heel Flies with Suggestions for Their Control, by F. C. Bishopp, E. W.' Laake, and R. W. Wells, of the bureau of entomology, has just been published for free distribution. Crossbred Pigs Often Excel the Pure Breds Crossbred pigs very often excel purebreds in vigor and ability to make rapid and economical gains. It Is usually not ' advisable to use these crossbreds for breeding purposes, since their offspring frequently lack uniformity in type. One should certainly not mate crossbred sows with a crossbred boar. If these sows are used for breeding purposes, better results should be expected if a good Poland China or Duroc is used th?n if a boar of some other breed is used. No doubt you will secure good results by mating them with a Poland China boar, we are inclined to believe that pure bred sows will prove more satisfactory for breeding purposes than the crossbred sows.
