JORDAN HIGH SCHOOL WINS CHAMPIONSHIP FROM OGDEN HIGH SCHOOL 21 TO 18. For the first time in the history of the South Rich High School it won a place in the State Basketball tournament and brought a gi eat honor to the South Rich school and to Rich county. The school and Rich county are mighty proud of the Trojans and the fine showing they made at the tournament. They were a .popular team 'thru-ou- t the tournament and had many Their fighting spirit and gilt edge passing drew for them many friends and admirers. They were defeated by the strong Murray team the first day. After leading them at the quarter and the half, which put them in the consolation class Each game they payed was more or less a surprise to basketball fans as they wrere usually picked to lose, but each time they came out victorious in fact they played better in every game and in the final game with Granite High School they were at their best. The Granite High School have been the state champions for the past two or three years and finished third in the Jordan District this year, so it was indeed a surprise and honor for them to win over the Granite school. It was through the fine coaching of B. W. Bails and the great efforts of Supt. R. D. Law in getting the play off game at Evanston, together with the support given the team by Rich county citizens, that counted a lot In the winning of the Consolation Trophy. Sacrament meeting at Garden City Sunday March 10th as devoted to the subject, The Prevention of Crime. President N. John Hodges presided and conducted. The chairman of each of the five committees was allowed 10 minutes for discussion. Arden Pope summarized' the outline that had been received from the state council; Royal Pope discussed ways and means for employment of the unmarried men of the ward;' Paul A. Spence discussed leisure time activities; Florence D. Cook reviewed the general plan of organization, and Bishop C. W. Pope spoke on the guidance of youth. Among other things he said By far the most necsesary thing for people to do is to train the children. It is more essential that they have room to play than that the adults have room to work. You spend millions on school houses yet neglect the greater matter of places to play and instructors in play. You deliberately create criminals by laws that make a crime of play. When children play marbles on the sidewalk they obstruct, when they play baseball in the street they annoy, when they play Indian in the alley they endanger. The law does not distingish between play and crime when it comes to children. You devote millions to police courts and prisons while if you took care of the children in a decent way, your prisons would not be needed. Take care of the children and the grownups wil take care of themselves. Train every child in the nation. What we need in this nation is an Institution or correspondence course to teach people how to live. Yet states and school systems are doing anything but that. Single tax is grand and socialism is alluring, womens rights are and simplified needed, dress reform prohibition, and spelling, criminal laws are all right in their way but still the one thing needful. is to know how to live. Thats whats the matter with all of us who go wrong. Only one kind of education is of first account for a bad boy, it is the kind that educates him to live. Geography and manual training will not cure him of his cussedness, nor will common fractions and United States history help him to be clean and brave and kind.
