Perhaps not strangely, what appears to be the object of Mussolinis ambitious eye today is the same nation that thwarted Crispl with the complete annihilation of 20,000 Italian troops nearly 40 years ago. It is Ethiopia, often called Abyssinia, the last Independent nation in the Dark Continent, and the seat of one of the few absolute monarchies left in RESUMPTION CHICKS NEED ROOM, GOOD, CLEAN FEED Simple Flat Trough Provides Ample Space- - lng Italian colonial ambitions and causing Crispis political downfall Yet Italy retained possessions in Somaliland, bordering Ethiopia on the south and east Libya, to the north apd west of Ethiopia, although cut off by the Sudan, Italy gained by the terms of peace in the Balkan war In 1912. Every one will agree that a good ra- tion is essential to raising good chicks, but not every one recognizes the important part feeders play in raising these good chicks efficiently and economically. Enough feeder space should be provided so that all chicks can eat at one time. Lack of space causes slow and uneven growth and, frequently, troubles with cannibalism, for an idle chick gets into mischief. A four-fofeeder, feeding from both sides, will lake care of 100 chicks up to about three weeks. Then more space must be provided. It takes two feeders for .300 chicks during most of the growing period, t Feeders that get filled with litter and filth discourage eating. Set feeders up on stands and clean out any litter that does accumulate. Feeders that are too expensive discourage providing as many as are needed. A simple flat trough made of board and a revolving lath, a reel lengthwise of the feeder to keep chicks out of the feed, are easy to make and entirely satisfactory. As chicks grow the feeders can be raised higher from the floor and thus use floor space to better advantage. Floors can be kept much cleaner and chicks protected against disease if feeders are placed on shallow platforms, covered with mesh hardware cloth. These should be Just big enough for the feeder and to collect the droppings and waste feed and water. Can be Helped! Since bovine tuberculosis is being brought under control, a higher percentage of Infected hogs are found to carry the avian type of disease. The prospective poultry breeder, in casting about for a breed or variety with which to specialize, is favored with a wide diversity of types and colors. The original color pigments in the plumage of fowls was red and black, according to authorities, but the possible number of color variations is practically unlimited. Not only are there different colors such as brown, buff, blue, red and black, but various combinations of these. The colors noted are due to the presence of pigment or coloring matter in the shaft of the feather. The absence of any color pigment produces a white feather. Los Angeles Times. A stronghold of the Coptic religion, similar in many respects to the Roman Catholic, except for the fact that its priests are allowed to marry, Ethiopia was shut off from the rest of the world in the Sixth century by the closing in of Mohammedan nations on all of its borders. Not until the Fourteenth century was it destined to begin asserting its power over East Africa once more, and that revival lasted only until 200 years later, when Mohammedanism again isolated the nation. In the Sixteenth century or an even earlier day its people have remained until the last decade or two. Italy Starts Spreading. Italy began her colonial empire building in 1885 by occupying Masso-wthe natural port of trade of northern Ethiopia. This invasion came as a result of a situation much like that of today. In 1884 a military party of Italians on an official mission had been .slain at the hands of Ethiopian natives; It was the third such outrage in three years. Expeditionary forces 6et sail from Naples, even as they have in the past few weeks. Urged to withdraw the African forces by nearly all political parties at home, Premier Crispl refused on grounds of upholding the national honor, and Italy continued to occupy points along the Abyssinian plateau. Development of this policy reached its crisis when the Italian army was wiped out by the forces of Menelek near Adowa, March 1, 1896, temporarily end- - con-tai- the-ele- a, . No Easy Pickings. The Ethiopian charge daffaires in Rome, Negra-da- s Yassou (meaning Jesus), declared With 6,000 years of Independence behind us, we would fight to the last man, woman and child If Italy declared war. Italys chief espoused reason for refusing to submit to League arbitration was Its contention that Ethiopia never should have been admitted to the League in the first place. She asserted that Ethiopia had never fulfilled the condition of her admission to the League, which was the abolishment of slavery, and she was correct in the assertion. Another objection was the general disunion among the tribes in peace time. Even if we admit that the Abyssinian authorities were In Ignorance of incidents which appear like provocations, the assertion of the Italian government officials read, one must ask how a country whose government cannot maintain discipline among its own soldiers can be put on the same footing as civilized nations.
