Entered as second-clas- s matter Feb. 8, 1929, at the post office Randolph, Utah, under the Act of Mar. 3, 1879. News Notes . i Properly Fitted Collar for Horse ' Clear and cold ts Cache allotment. The weather valleys thermometer registered 42 degrees bejow zero at Lewiston and 32 below at Logan Tuesday night, and belowiWednesday it was ,28 degrees v... - t 1 W J f j No morfe inexcusable thing is to be seen on the farm than a horse working in the field with an improperly fitted collar. If the collar is too large, chafing and sores result and it is agony to the horse to be kept in harness. If, on the. other hand, the collar is too short, the horse is choked down, and cannot give satisfactory service. A few points in selection of collars are well worth remembering. Points on Selection. If1 the horse is thick through the npper portion of the neck, he should half or full be ' fitted with a sweeney collar. The reason is that these collars are not so fully padded about the upper portion of the neck as they are farther down, where the neck of the horse is not so thick and needs heavier padding. A collar results from a careful study of the animal's shoulder in these respects. After the collar is selected, measure it jon the neck. This is best done by pressing the collar back against the horse's shoulder and while so held, testing whether there is enough room between the. neck and the sides of the collar to permit passage of the fingers up and down. If so, the collar is not too tight, and yet is large enough, for anything roomier would probably cause chafing. Next test for length by fitting the collar on the horse with hames and traces in place and arrange to have some pull exerted on the traces while the horse walks. If this is not possible, have a man on each side of the horse, pull down and press back on the collar in order to get it firmly placed against the shoulder. In this position there should be a space of inches between one and the bottom of the collar and the neck of the horse. If the collar is too short, the horse will choke, as has been explained; if too long, the draught of the hames will be brought too low and improper balance will ensue. Pulling Contests Help. Horse- pu lling contests, says the American Horse Breeders association, in a recent pamphlet on Horses and have Mules for Power and Profit, been and are of immense value in demonstrating the proper fitting of collars. . well-fittin- one-ha- - g lf .. Rich Calcareous Loess Helps Corn Production . The corn belt soils are the world's richest because they are young soils, according to Dr. R. S. Smith of the The origin of University of Illinois. the soils is rich calcareous glacial deposits or rich calcareous loess. The time elapsed since the last glacial age has been short and the weathering of the soils is not far enough advanced to deplete the fertility of the original elements. The climate of the corn belt is favorable to formation of good soils due to the frozen condition of the soil a good par: of the year, which prevents leaching for the period of the winter. The grass that grew on the prairies of the corn belt contributed organic matter to the soil, while the forested areas left very little vegetable matter in those soils.. Millets' may be planted for green If land is in a good State of fertility, good yields bf barnyard milsecured on lighter lands let may and for seeding, use one of the foxtail millets, preferably the Hungarian. Millets axe shallow rooted,., therefore the seedbed should be, well prepared. Complaints are often .ade.that millet is an exhaustive crop. VERNAL The severe weather is causing hundreds of quail and pheasants to seek shelter on farms and in barnyards within the city limits. The Vernal Gun and Rifle Club, Boy Scout troops, farmers and individual residents of Vernal are cooperating in feeding the birds. Sacks of screenings are being sent to all communities of the county.
