GEORGE Washington county grape growers are confronted with problems of marketing a heavy surplus of grapes and may enter the business of producing grape juice, according to advices received by Commissioner Hardfox Bennion of the state department of agriculture. EPHRAIM At a recent meeting of the advisory board of the Manti National Forest Woolgrowers association, held at Ephraim, the dalle for the annual meeting of the association was set for February 1 at Ephraim. PRICE Efforts are being made by citizens of Emery county to secure a sugar factory. A guarantee of 7000 acres of beets will not only assure a factory, but also a railroad so that the product may be shipped with the minimum of cost, promoters assert. Elmo citizens announce that they are prepared to guarantee 1000 acres, and Cleveland and Huntington are bbth interested in the proposition. HEBER J. F. English of the U. S. bureau of public roads, and Henry T. Coleman, local reprenta-tiv- e of the Utah state road commission, accompanied the Wasatch county commissioners on an inspection tour up Daniels canyon to look over some changes in the right of way contemplated in the coming years improvement program on d the lower end of the project. FILLMORE Following in the wake of one of the most severe wind and dust storms ever known In Millard county, a light snow covered the landscape. It is hoped by agriculturists that the present skiff will be a forerunner to a wet season. The three inches that fell near hear is measured in monetary values well into the thousands. Indications are that winter has at last cast her spell over the long protracted fall. CEDAR CITY Following three days of violent winds from the south, and a light snowfall Monday, the weather calmed and snow started falling in earnest here Tuesday. Livestock owners were pleased, because the situation on the ranges in the western end of Beaver, Iron and Washington counties had bean critical. Water holes there are few, and unless there is snow, large areas of the range cannot he utilized. COALVILLE The Summit county commissioners at their January meeting reduced the road budget for the 1930 oiling program from $33,000 to $14,000, it having been decided between the state road commission and the county authorities that the Echo canyon road from Baskin to Emory will not be included in the coming seasons work. However, the county commission and road commission entered into an agreement for the widening of the Weber river bridge east of Wanship. SALT LAKE Snow which fell generally over the state during the past week has proved highly beneficial to watersheds, grazing lands and winter grain according to the weekly weather and crop report of J. Cecil Alter, in charge of the local office of the weather bureau. Sheep and cattle were In poor condition In some sections prior to the storm, and wheat was suffering due to a lack of snow covering. On New York farms depredation is a little over of the total cost of operation. Fuel is the next largest item and makes approximately another third of the cost The other third is interest, cash and labor for repairs, lubrication, insurance and storage. Cost Per Hour. With such fixed charges the total number of hours of work done by a tractor makes a wide variation in the cost an hour for the work done. The tractors used 400 hours a year cost 86 cents an hour, while the tractors used 20 hours cost $1.37 for each hour. In the survey made on tractor costs of the it was found that tractor work done in the state was custom work, and that the average tractor in New York works on four different farms. Estimates made by farmers who kept records on both tractors and horses indicate that the tractor saved 'the work of one' and months horses, and three and of hired nbor a year. The tractor including equipment cost $1.25 an hour while the horses with the tools used cost 68 cents an hour on the average. more a year The horses cost than the tractor but the horses worked more hours. Horses Not Displaced. In spite of the popular 'statements that the work on many farms is done entirely by tractors, Professor Ilart says, We have found that horses have not yet been displaced to any great extent In the lighter and more rapid field operations such as cultivating and haying. The greatest field use of tractors now made in New York farms is in the heavy-draoperations like plowing, harrowing, and disking. With the present high cost of man and horse labor rapid development and improvement can be expected in the lighter farm tractor equipment, he says. The tractor has many distinct advantages if it can be sed enough to be economical, and if the farm layout is favorable; It will work long hours, and in hot weather, and it will speed up work in a critical time. Some conditions still demand horses, and Professor Hart suggests that before a farmer buys a tractor he must first answer the question of whether it will pay. The next question is whether or not the money necessary to buy and operate a tractor will pay better if Invested elsewhere in the farm business. one-thir- one-sixt- d h eight-tenth- s graves go to MEN the suffering an tLeir ignorant over-stro- ng pipe has caused others.
